Motorists on Kahekili Highway in Kaneohe experienced an unusual traffic delay this afternoon as putrefying pieces of whale carcass fell off a flatbed truck onto the roadway.

The carrion, being transported by Hawaii Pacific University for research, littered the intersection of Kahekili and Haiku Road for more than two hours, creating a noxious nuisance to neighbors.

Honolulu police diverted traffic for about 20 to 30 minutes while the pieces were moved off the roadway. The largest piece was 10 feet long and needed to be cut with chain saws in order to be moved.

"It didn't cause any major backups, so we're thankful for that," said Tammy Mori, spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation.
