I think this would be a great feature for DU.
Along the lines of the AIM 'away messages'.

Rather than using search to see if someone is online, you go to your buddy list and there's a little 'away' message which states their status.

For example: I click on LynneSin and her messages says 'Feeding Willy, BRB'.

I click on MrCoffee and his message says 'visiting the sniffas'

What do you think?

1. How do you use search to see if someone's online?

2. You don't. You just use search
to find their last post which may indicate that they are online.

4. I think if you don't know where 'your people' are at any giving moment of the day...
Then no-less than two things, 1) you may not need to know, and/or 2) there's a likelihood they don't want you to know. Or do you intend to infuse special icons for special people i.e.

When b-baby is knitting a sock, or getting all homey with a pot of soup er'whatever; would you have an icon indicating as such? A wooden spoon stirring a pot? A kitteh batting some yarn, etc?

5. I suspect the messageboard supports this
but the feature is shut off. Most messageboards have a system to display which registered users have been active in the last x minutes. You can of course "hide" yourself, but the admins/mods still know.

13. I imagine that the site is already able to do it....
but it's up to the site admins whether they will enable the feature. Or not.

I admin for a message board on Yuku that offers the feature. We do use it - but it does give each member the option of turning the feature off.

There's a little circle next to each member's name....if it's gray, it tells the rest of us that they're offline, or that they disabled that feature in their privacy options; if it's blue, they're online.

Our message board also has the option of listing the members at the bottom of the home page who have been on the board in the last 15 minutes; but we opted (after a member vote) to disable that feature. We didn't feel it was necessary - it seemed to be a TMI issue.

Then everyone will know when I'm PMS-ing and my posts will not require a disclaimer along the lines of: "bear in mind that I'm hormonally psychotic and irrational, but..."

I dreamt about JackMN again last night. What do you suppose that means?

I dreamt he came for a visit, but didn't like the puppy, so we all had to move outside to eat/sleep/etc.

And, at one point, he signed that I was a moose. Really hurt my feelings.

20. Oh he would LOVE your puppy!
He is completely enamored with animals- always has been. He will spend hours playing with people's pets. He will pound on people but not on animals.

I am going to have to look up the sign for moose!

He cried and pointed at me when I dropped him off at school today. What an awful guilt trip that was.

39. I have no complaints about the Delaware toll booths.
The collectors have always been very nice to me. They say hello, and thank you, and heck - sometimes they even tell me to have a safe drive!

The NJ toll booth collectors, on the other hand....with one look, they are saying "Give me your fucking money and get the fuck outta here!"

42. I always say in NJ, prior to my EasyPass working up there.
WHen I pull up to the booth, I hand the collector the ticket and the money, and say: "I will pay your toll, but I did NOT enjoy your road. Not one little bit".

Then, I pull away. You should see their faces. Priceless.

Can't do it anymore because of EasyPass, so I have to think of something else.

46. Well, that's easy enough!
As you're passing through, the cameras focus in on 3 things: your EZPass code bar, the driver's side of the car, and the tail end as you pull away.

You can tell them EXACTLY what you think of NJ roads by giving them the one-finger wave as you pass through. :P
