LOL! Rarely has the Andy Griffith show made me laugh out loud literally
but it just did.

Andy walks in on Barney, who's playing checkers by himself. Makes a move, then moves to the other seat and ponders his next move.

Andy interrupts him with "What're you doing?"

"Playing checkers"

"With yourself?!"

"Yep"

"How ya doing"

Won 2, lost 2

2. true
but it was a brilliant character and a brilliant portrayal.

An obnoxious know-it-all dumbass but he made the character totally loveable.

4. I remember someone here on DU
telling a story about Barney showing up at a party in full uniform shortly before he died.
That is a man who enjoyed life, imo.

The scenes where he would be having a private phone call with his girlfriends and Andy would come sneaking in always cracked me up.

5. There were quite a few funny moments on The Andy Griffith Show.
My favorite is when the Darlings came into town and Charlene Darling took a shine to Andy. They moved into an abandoned storefront to spend the night after getting kicked out of the hotel. Andy proceeds to kick them out and while he's doing so you see Charlene's hand reach out around the open door and start pawing Andy.

Any episode with the Darlings, Earnest T. Bass & Barney, the goat who ate the dynamite, are
