Godspeed, little mouse...
Gawd... I just went in the bathroom and noticed my cat in the tub - not too unusual, as he just likes it in there.

Then I heard some rustling and a squeak and looked more closely, and there was Mr. Mouse in there, trying to hide between the curtain and the tub, and the cat pawing at him.

So out goes the cat and I grab an oven mitt and a bag and catch the little guy and let him outside.

5 minutes more and I'd be cleaning out mouse guts. But he was unharmed - just a bit scared.

4. Yeah, well...too bad
speaking of cats....we are leaning heavily towards getting a new kitten soon. Our 4 yr old cat, Flame, has been alone for about 18 mos, since her sister Spark was hit by a car. I think we're just about ready to take the step and get another one.

ShineGirl, 11 1/2, is beside herself with joy at the prospect.

I'm a bit concerned about Kitty Politics.

Any advice?

6. I'd get a boy kitty
I think two females tend to not to get along as well, but my girls have always at least tolerated the boys.

Good luck! Kittens are fun!

7. yeah,gender choice was a big topic of discussion at dinner tonite.
OF COURSE, the daughter wants a girl kitty! :eyes:

MrShine says male cats spray, so he's against that idea.

Hmmmm...

I should probably do some online research about this.

10. neutered males rarely do.
I had one male who sprayed, but only after another cat was brought into the house after he was the undisputed king of the world for many years.

All my other boys have never had a problem, and if you get him as a kitten and he's used to another cat being there, I doubt it would become an issue.

14. I had a neutered male cat who sprayed. In fact, get this:
when we brought home our first born kid from the hospital he actually sprayed the diaper bag!

It had to be thrown away, b/c as you know, it's basically nuclear waste and you can't ever get rid of the smell completely.

It was a total "Fuck You!" from him to us.

He KNEW his position as king of the world had been forever changed.

But, I get what you're saying...it's good advice. The problematic part is getting ShineGirl and MrShine to agree to a male kitten.

19. I once had a cat shit in my bedroom slippers
because I had the audacity to go away for along weekend.

They can be spiteful.

My male who sprayed? He only ever did it in my roommates room - after she brought home a cat.

20. I was housesitting for some friends a few years back
And their cat took a big old crap in his own food dish. I looked him right in the eye and said "You're the one who has to eat out of that dish, not me asshole!"

I think he growled at me. I didn't realize cats growled until then.

21. oh yes
my old, dearly departed guy would growl. He was a real piece of work.

I had him for 16 years and in all that time, nobody could understand WHY I kept him. But I adored him, and he could be a real love-nugget for short, unpredictable periods.

When I finally had to have him put down, his final act was to reach out and claw my brother so hard he left three claws in my brother's hand. That was after enough sedatives to knock out a golden retriever.

He's Satan's cat, now. But I still miss him.

12. If you get a male, have him neutered.
That should take care of the spraying problem. And of course, if you get a girl, get her spayed.

8. I would have done the same thing.
There is no sense in having a critter dead unnecessarily if you can simply move it outside.

It's great that your cat has a healthy hunting instict, but it's just as great that you don't have mouse remains to clean up.

:)

13. oh, he's always been a hunter
he catches anything and everything. He's quite good at it.

My little girl, though, is.. um... special. The only thing she's EVER brought me was a worm. She came in with that "I caught something" meow that I know too well, and went running to see what she'd gotten - and there she was proud as can be with a worm hanging out of her mouth.

15. LOL!
I've had 5 cats and only one of them was a hunter. My first cat, Pixie, the 29 lb Maine Coone beast of a cat. He used to bring home dead rabbits and mice and birds and small dogs all the time. (Just kidding about the small dogs. He used to chase those away instead of killing them.)

My other cats couldn't hunt to save their lives, so it's a damned good thing I keep them indoors and feed them. :)

and he is BIG!!! He is so big that he walks slow. When I spotted him a couple of times I told my Unk,"Look, there he is!!" and both times he got to see him too. I don't know what this mouse is eating but he is outta there! Going up to the cabin this week-end and hopefully deal with him!

And less pawing, more threatening to lay out traps and poison.

It was the cutest little tiny fieldmouse. Stood right out in the open for me to catch too. :) I think it had learned that its cuteness will protect it from humans.

I named him Magellan. Because he tried to circumnavigate the house, but the natives stopped his journey before it was done.

23. You are a good person!
Our cats regularly bring in live chipmunks. We always cordon off the cats, open all the doors and hope the chipmunk finds its way out. So far it's worked.

24. Glad you saved him. I used a cannister vac once to save a mole.
At least I think it was a mole and not a vole. It looked like it didn't have eyes. My then teenage son's friend had caught one and had it in a little tennis shoe key chain thingy. He walked up to me in the kitchen and opened it, I shrieked and the little guy/gal shot right out of that little shoe and ran under my fridge.

I was afraid to move the fridge for fear of squishing it, afraid if I didn't do something that the cats would get it, so I thought what the heck lets try the old cannister vacuum. It worked..the sound of him being sucked up was awful, but I quickly grabbed the bag, took it outside and opened it. He was dusty, but he shook himself off and ran away.

I'm not always so friendly with mice/rodents..but if they're visible & I'm able to catch them and give them outside freedom I will over the alternative.

25. Cats- murderous villains of the animal kingdom.
And I love them. :D

That's the one thing I dislike about cats- the pleasure they derive from killing. Our pet betta met his fate that way.

26. people are missing the big picture- MOUSE IN BATHROOM!
ICK! The cat isn't doing his job very well. Forget playing with the mice, kill them on sight! No mice in the home. I hate when rodents get in, so destructive and they carry disease. The old fashioned snap traps, baited with peanut butter, does the trick.

29. I'm with you. Mice in the house are a definite no-no. What food they don't
actually eat, they spoil with droppings. They can also shred paper and furniture and can tear insulation out of appliances. Some of the diseases they can carry are quite nasty, too.

http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/hanta/hps/noframes/rodents.htm

My kitty has kept my house mouse-free since she was very young. That's her job. She catches them outside before they even get in the house and brings them in to show me what a good job she's doing. My dog kills them on the back porch when they try to get into her food dish. Neither of them ever eats their kill so I have to dispose of the bodies, but that doesn't bother me at all.
