Keep your Dunkin' Donuts ... KRISPY KREME is the best there is!
Holy crap, I ate two entire boxes of Krispy Kreme chocolate iced donuts this weekend. I pity the poor fool who lives in an area where there are no Krispy Kremes. They are God's Most Perfect Donuts. There can be NO ARGUMENT about it. Dunkin' Donuts? BAH!

Krispy Kreme, the King of Donuts.

I'll agree on the Dunkin' D's coffee. But can you believe that there are in fact people (my sister-in-law, e.g.) who actually PREFER DD's donuts over Krispy Kremes? It makes one wonder about their judgment ...

President of the company, Lawrence W. Shipley, III, continues the tradition with strong growth and high expectations for the future. Lawrence III carries on the tradition of great Do-Nuts and kolaches and strives to find better ways of making your mornings start off right. He continues to expand the company, careful however to grow slowly, while never compromising the quality of the product and excellent customer service.

Although I don't agree with their definition of a "kolache". I don't know who corrupted the meaning from "pig in a blanket" to what "The Kolache Factory" calls a "kolache" but they should look like this:

koláček

:)

My favorite fillings were always the poppyseed kolaches :)

When I used to take I-10 to 71 to get to Austin (I now take 290 out of Houston) was it Bastrop that sold kolaches like that or am I thinking of another one of those small towns the Houston to Austin route took? I know Bastrop has a nice little bakery in the town square, but can't remember if they sell kolaches or not.

One of these days I'll just find a really good recipe and make my own. Let everyone at work truly understand that the crap they buy at Kolache Factory ain't the real thing ;)

Or post your Grandmother's recipe :D

maybe 50 or so years ago in some areas where germans or czechs predominated they did, but those vestiges are long gone, rubbed out in retail scarred small towns with no local flavor with the exception of wal mart, schlotzkys, golden corral, and a beer joint or two.

i'll side with the poles and bohemians regarding kolacky.

114. i've lived in austin - it's now houston lite
whatever european influences remain in the hill country are ultimately vestigial and largely german and czech in scope.

you will find more austin and houston yuppoids in the hill country than you will native german speakers.

it doesn't mean you can't find a decent bakery in texas, but it does mean the majority of texans don't know dick about european pastries, because they call a pig in a blanket a "kolache."

and a pig in a blanket is not a buttery pastry with a fruit or cheese filling in the middle of it.

...just south of Houston. The influences are NOT vestigial--it's in the food, the music, and the families who've been there for generations (geez, just take a look at the names on the blue-ribbon winners at teh Caldwell Kolache Festival over the years). I still have several close friends from school (Texas A&M) who are Texas-Czech, and the food and the traditions are quite strong. If you're holding up metro Austin as the example, you're looking at the wrong place.

And the pig in blanket is misnomered, and actually a variation of a different Czech pastry, the klobasnek.

You have to go to the small towns like Hallettsville to get the real thing.

My Grandmother was first generation so her recipes where from the old country.

I wish I could bake as good she could.

A lot of the old country ways went when my Grandparents generation passed away.

128. Kolache Dough
1 pkg.dry yeast

1 cup milk

1/2 cup butter Crisco or oleo

1/4 cup sugar

2 small eggs

1 tsp. salt

1/8 tsp. nutmeg

3 1/2 cup flour

Combine milk, and oleo. Heat to melt ingredients. Let cool. Add yeast and sugar.

Let stand until foamy. Add eggs and salt. Add flour enough to make dough.

Pull away from the bowl and let rise. Pat or knock down dough.

Fill with your favorite filling.

3 cup warm water

1/2 cup warm milk

2/3 cup shortening

1/2 cup sugar

l large egg

2 Tbsp. dry yeast

Salt

71/2 to 81/2 cup flour.

Dissolve yeast in warm water and warm milk and put into bowl with the rest of ingredients. Mix and add flour a little at a time.

Work dough and let rest for 5 to 8 minutes.

Work dough until smooth. Let set until double in size.

Make rolls or use dough the size of eggs for kolaches.

I don't know the temp to use to bake the kolaches, the recipes didn't say.

I would guess 375 or 400.

I hadn't made kolaches in a long time so I will have to relearn.

This will give you a idea of what to do.

I think you also put melted butter on the kolaches

when you take them out of the oven.

I really need to find my Grandmother's recipes.

Good luck.

124. I make a mean chicken fried steak.
Most people haven't had a real good chicken fried steak, and homemade cream gravy.

My Grandpa could barbecue, and all he used was simple set up.

He had tin for the 3 sides and chicken wire on the top, cooked with pecan wood and a little oak wood.

He also used Shiner beer in making the bbq sauce.

I miss those days.

They had big garden in the back of the house, fresh everything.

The ideal Krispy Kreme is hot off the production line. Once it gets cold, its glory fades.

But when it's hot off the line? Foodgasm.

many KKs and most of the ones in New England no longer cook on the premises but instead get their donuts shipped in. The only way they come locally is cold and stale.

38. C'mon New Englanders where's the love for DnD?
I first uncounted these so called "Donuts" from this place Krispy Kreme while stationed in Biloxi and they are not even of the same species as a good thick, heavy cakelike DnD donut!

(I think it has a lot to do with what you were brought up with, the St Louis area has a traditional donut style different from either and I didn't like them either :) And it's really just about the coffee anyway, that's why Krispy Kreme hasn't done well up here in the New England area)

a donut shop on every block in Ontario? I actually saw two Tim Horton's on opposite sides of the street in the same block in London. Toronto was just as bad... TH's staked out on every corner almost.

What is it about donuts up there? Is it just necessary to have something with the coffee that keeps the blood from freezing?

60. These two places have surfaced in my mind of late
Cesc Fabregas was once sighted at a Krispy Kreme establishment. If you don't know, he's a Spanish footballer who also represents well the North London club Arsenal FC.

For some days Toru Okada would do nothing but make his way to a bench in downtown Shibuya, observing passers by. For lunch he would purchase a donut and coffee at a local Dunkin' Donuts. This is in relevance to a fictional tale by Haruki Murakami titled "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle."

I haven't ate or drank from either, though.

Surest way to get me to pull into the parking lot.

Oktoberain had heard me speak repeatedly about the ambrosia that is a hot KK straight off the line, and how i had once finished a whole dozen by myself (because when they're hot like that, they're like cotton candy), but she did not BELIEVE until we were in Clearwater FL a couple of years back, and stopped at a KK shop because the light was on.

Instant conversion.

The closest location to where we live is about 80 miles north of here, and when WVU is back in session in the fall, i am sorely tempted to talk one of our friends into a "food-trip", wherein we will go and get Popeye's chicken and dirty rice for lunch, then geta couple of boxes of KK glazed for dessert. :9

/why no, i'm not gonna die young.
