Hempstead is hardly "the city that never sleeps". Sheesh...

10. It's not Hempstead, it's Elmont, and one block from New York City
I live withing walking distance of Belmont Race Track. It is literally across the street from the eastern border of New York City, Cambria Heights/Queens Village, Queens. So it's not a stretch to think of it as part of New York. Hempstead is several miles further into Long Island.

While this part of Queens may not look like Manhattan, it's very much New York City -- the birth place of rap music, for example, and the place where Al Sharpton grew up running errands for James Brown.
