1. they are quite expensive and never fresh
the key to really really good coffee is freshness.

find a local roaster and drink what he/she drinks.

seriously.

3. Every cup is brewed fresh,
and it takes only seconds. This is why they are so popular right now in Germany, where I am staying right now. I am thinking of buying one once I am back in the States in a few weeks. I had a few cups here, and the taste was far superior to the taste of a normal coffee (from a dripping-kind-coffeemaker). Of course you need good coffee, no matter what machine you use

6. freshness is not from brewing but from the age of the beans since roasting
after a couple weeks, the oils in the beans start to go rancid and lose flavor

2. I'm a recent convert to the French Press method...
...fresh coffee, you make only as much as you need, and tastes GREAT

4. That's true! The taste is great, but
I thought one of these pad-single serve coffeemakers would be more practical in the office.

8. I have this one:

Is this what you're talking about? It's the Black & Decker Home Cafe and I really don't care for it. I bought it a couple of years ago, and the little pod thingies just weren't that fresh. I never thought the coffee tasted very good, to be honest. It's too bad, because it's certainly more convenient for work - a lot less fussy.

However, I recently saw this:

I guess you can use your own coffee to fill up these reusable pods. That may make it taste better. Maybe I'll give this a try.

9. I have this machine, and I am very happy with it
Drink two cups a day, as work. I prefer to the Millstone brand pods. As someone who drinks his coffee black, I am pretty sensitive to flavor, and I am happy with the coffee.

5. It sounds like a big waste of resources to me.
I mean, unless you compost the whole pad and grounds, that all goes into the garbage, as opposed to just the grounds. Plus, extra manufacturing costs, transportation costs, to make those pads. And a lesser availability of a variety of coffees -- I'll eat my hat if you can buy fair-trade coffee varieties in those things.

Second vote for the French press here. :D

11. I live in Duesseldorf right now.
We have been here a year for my husband's sabbatical. We are both German, but live in the States since 2000.

14. I am German
and live in Frankfurt.

There are a couple of Germans around here. And also some other European DUers. And some Americans who live in Europe.

10. We got a Keurig and love it
But you can't get the K-Cups in your local grocery store. The Tassimo system has the little pods that you can get at Harris Teeter grocery.

We order our K-Cups online...am waiting for a shipment right now  You can get a limited selection at Target and Bed, Bath and Beyond.

I really like the Keurig. We got ours on sale at BBB for less than $200.

Hope that helps.
