WannaB and I went to the mall today (kitten lover alert)...
Edited on Mon May-19-08 08:05 PM by MrsGrumpy
Yesterday, or it could have been a few days before, she had gone to the mall with DDH68... They had played with a (rather ear challenged) Papillon. She told me all about it-including the "Of course we don't use puppy mills" spiel that they gave her. They also saw two tiny little black kittens, that look just like Merlin (only about 25 pounds smaller) and were very sweet, she said.

I let her take me in there when we went to the mall today for DDH68's graduation gift-which was this:

and OH MY GOD!!! They were cu---ute!!! We played with them and one of them tried to climb on WannaB through the cage---only there was a cage there so I said,"We have to leave NOW." because anyone knows that same kitten can be had for free(I mean Merlin was and all)...but god were they cute...so I asked as we walked out,"How much for the kittens?" You know what they said? "$189.00" (that's each but I'm sure they would probably :eyes: strike a deal on the pair for $300 because who would want to leave one of those sweet babies alone...I mean, how would you choose? So, $300 for a standard domestic short haired kitten. A standard impulse buy. And I was almost impulsive...

...but Merlin would kill me and/or die...

...and 189 freakin' dollars for a kitten????????????

10. Because I have to...
There's no such thing as a pet store (especially at a mall) that doesn't get their pups from puppy mills and their cats from lesser known cat mills.

So, there's the flvegan PSA for the day. And that's one to grow on.

11. We totally know that...
Edited on Mon May-19-08 08:44 PM by MrsGrumpy
but WannaB can't resist walking in...

For me, it hurts to see them. Our dog was bought from a breeder. Our cat was a "gift" (an alley cat my father in law picked up at work).

I did not think, given the wording of the sentence in which I mentioned their claim, there was need for me to post a disclaimer and/or PSA. That, and I'm not stupid...I just act it sometimes.

12. Oh, I know.
My PSA is for anyone otherwise uninformed. I'm like the fine print on the "no money down" ads.

15. ahh how well I know this, my mother was a professional Show breeder for decades
She even sold her bloodlines into the Saudi Royal family. the Prince (he's King now) came all the way to San Francisco and picked three bitches and a stud and took them back to his home.

yes, I know all this and still....... one day in the Mall........

yes, we bought a 14 week old Border Collie. I knew he was a puppy mill puppy since all his papers had Missouri on them and that state is notorious....

Anyway, since he was so old (for a puppy) I got him half price and 10 months later got every dime back since I spotted the way he got up and sure enough, he has dual hip dyslapasia (sp?)

But you know what? he's lying here at my feet, 9 years later, the most loving, loyal and smart animal I've ever owned.

He deserved the life I've given him and I bless that day I bought that overgrown puppy in that mall all those years ago, and when he finally crosses Rainbow Bridge, it will tear the heart out of my chest.

18. If people stop buying puppies and kittens from pet stores it will stop the demand
And when demand goes down supply does too so it becomes less profitable for the puppy mills.

I refuse to buy anything in a pet store that sells puppies or kittens.

16. Never in a million years.
There are homeless kittens constantly up for adoption in any local shelter around the country. Hell, you could probably take a walk around your neighborhood and find some homeless kittens if you were observant enough.

But even so, if I were to purchase a kitten from a pet store, maybe $50 would be my absolute limit. :o

17. I know. I mean they were little black kittens...just like Merlin
(our freebie) was 25 pounds and 15 years ago. It blows my mind that I am sure someone will buy them.

19. I can beat that... Peggy and I were in Malibu
Before lunch we went into the pet store. There was a REALLY COOL kitten there... it looked like a tiny leopard. I wasn't in the market for a kitten, but I was thinking about it while we were hanging out.

I figured, "It doesn't hurt to ask."

I asked.

$1100!!!!!!!

For a kitten!!!!!! :o
