I suspect the only reason Sam Ervin bothered with the Watergate investigation was because of where Nixon went to law school. Ervin was a passionate Tar Heel fan and very bitter about the success Duke's basketball team had in the 1960s when Dean Smith was just starting out.

Why has this issue never been addressed in all the articles and books about Watergate?
