Portable DVD players-- suggestions?
it's hubby's birthday this month and he's working 12 hour shifts, half are at night. I'm thinking a DVD player and a Netflix subscription would help pass the time on those nights the work load is light.

I'm looking at this one from Sony. It's a great price to get him started and if he uses it a lot we can always upgrade later

any suggestions?

2. I have an Insignia 7" player...
...I've given that player a serious workout for about three years and it's never let me down. I don't take Amtrak without it.

4. cool! I'm thinking a Netflix subscription to go with it.
those 12 hour graveyard shifts get pretty damned long when there's not much work

5. you can't really go wrong with any of the ones that look well made
at best buy. just stay away from the ones with names you cannot pronounce. they are likely crappy chinese models.

6. A dvd player really isn't his best bet. If you want him to LOVE you buy him THIS:
http://www.archos.com/products/gen_5/archos_705wifi/index.html?country=global&lang=en

An Archos 705. It has a 7" screen and can hold DOZENS of movies and THOUSANDS of mp3s. Anyone with a 2nd or 3rd shift job would WET him/her self for this unit. It's wi-fi enabled so syncing is a breeze and if you plug it into your cable tv line it will work as a tivo like DVR (and you can watch recorded tv shows later at work.)

This is the answer.

Thank you.

to get going

but DAMN! it's a big jump from $150 to $700 (or $300 for the teeny tiny screen) or more until we see how much he'll actually use it

9. Can't argue with you about that price!
But for $150 you can get a Sony PSP which will also hold multiple movies (2-8) as well as play mp3s as well as serve as an E-book reader as well as an internet browser, internet radio player. (and yeah it plays video games too LOL). It has a nice 4.3-inch 16:9 widescreen LCD screen.

It's a bargain all in one media center. The only downsize is converting videos to PSP's mp4 format but you can download some very user friendly software to do that for you.

Just a thought.

Thank you.

10. thanks for all the input, but I just don't see him happy with a 4" screen
he's 50 this year and had to finally give in and buy some reading glasses.

I'm thinking 8" is the minimum he'll use. I could get the coolest toy on the planet, but if it sits in the closet it's not much good eh?

you're a doll to take the time for those great suggestions tho :yourock:

11. I got a Zenith -- I'm really happy with it
That said, these days, a portable DVD is about 50-100 bucks. In some cases, for as little as a couple of hundered more, you can get a low end laptop with a DVD drive. This has the advantage that it will allow DVD viewing and some game playing.
