I certainly won't. Why does "Speed Racer" need to be made into a live action pic filled with a bunch of brain dead actors?

1. I might watch it on DVD but prolly not in the theatre
I loved the original cartoon and it just seems like a cheesy take off..

2. I was super excited when I heard the music fire up in the first movie trailer of it I saw
But then I saw it was a weird (appears to me, anyway) mix of animation and live, and it seemed all fucked up.

Too bad. I worshiped that show as a kid, and still love watching it.

3. When I saw the preview, I thought it was another Robert Rodriquez digital extravaganza
a la Spy Kids. It kind of makes me wonder if the Wachinski Brothers are confused about whether they are talented or schlockmeisters.

4. Well, I'll be on my way to Italy, by way of Frankfort, by way of Malpense in Milan.
Heading for Lake Maggiore, then Turin and on to Bologna and eventually, Venezia!

Life goes on for SOME Americans...

5. good luck at the Frankfort airport! Getting to our gate was like the amazing race.
be prepared and if need be use the stairs cause 50 people cannot fit into 2 tiny elevators. Have a ball btw, i'm so jealous.

6. Maybe fortunately, I have HOURS of layover to get to Malpense.
I think I'll get breakfast (it'll be 5:30 am fer chrissake) and do some reading. I'm not expecting a party...

Yeah, I'm pretty happy to escape for a couple of weeks to Old Europe. I've got me my walking shoes and I'm all geared up.

Hope to connect with some students in Bologna. Also want to go to that new arts district which sounds terrific. Oh, and the Capella degli Scrovegni, a short train trip from Venice to Padua to see the Giotto frescoes...the tour is in Italian (my Italian aint great) but I'llhave my art book!

All in all, I think it'll be a mind blowing trip. I will report on DU!

9. I'll be in Spain on a Smithsonian "art and architecture" tour in late October called
"Crossing the Pyrenees." It starts in Madrid then on to Barcelona and then northern Spain and across the Pyrenees into the Basque country. Bilbao is the only city I recognize among the ones I'll be in. I love that!

The SMithsonian has a few value priced tours and this is one of them. They are arts oriented and for art wonks like me, they are perfect. I went on another of their tours that took me to Florence, Perugia, Assisi (where I saw the magnificent Giottos on the life of St. Frances at the Basilica), and Rome (where I hired a private tour guide to takeus to all the Caravaggios in the city). What a great trip that was!

BTW, if you are anywhere near Boston, their MFA has a fabulous Spanish art exhibit entitled "El GReco to Velasquez" now on through July 27. Since my daughter lives in the Boston area we are planning on seeing it in June.

11. The website says it's done July 27.
Where are you now? Hope it's possible to get back there in time to see it.

It's hard to get these art trips pulled together. I'm retired, but even I find it hard to get everything organized. I missed a wonderful exhibit at the National Gallery in D.C. of some Renaissance Venice painters because I learned of it just too late to pull it all together. I'm still angry (a little bit) about it...(moan and groan)...I know, what a baby I am!

14. Interesting question. The NY Times runs a whole section on upcoming museum listings ever so often.
That's where I find stuff to see. You might try contacting the major museums in your area and ask. It does seem like such an important exhibit should be put together for more than just one museum. The MFA has made a huge deal out of this one, with its own special gift shop and restaurant menu themed to a Spanish motif. MFA is a great little museum...

16. Malpense is tiny
Edited on Mon Apr-28-08 09:43 AM by Kentish Man
as I recall. We were shocked that even Dublin airport seemed more..cosmopolitan. Still, that was 2 years ago. There were plenty of expensive shops, and lots of really good coffee!

ETA--AND, I'm exactly the right age to have love ol'Speed too. And Ultraman. Exactly what any 5 year old in 1970 was looking for

8. I missed out on the cartoon series (too young), but about ten years ago somebody did a sort of
musical mash-up featuring audio from "Speed Racer," mixed up to sound like Speed and Trixie were having sex. Pretty funny in retrospect.

13. I just bought my munchkins a collection of Speed Racer cartoons.
It was my favorite cartoon as a kid, and I figured that they would like it, too.

They absolutely love it!

My son is excited to see the movie. I am going to see it tomorrow at work.

I'll let you know how it looks.

15. My friend gets tons of DVDs so I'll watch it, but I wouldn't pay to do so.
Of course, that goes for 95% of the shlock they put out.

17. OK, just watched the trailers
on the website. Really bad. I hate when art/music/movies/things get modernized, or updated tastelessly. If someone wants to do a Beatles song and does a good job, fine, or even an Ultraman move, but this looked like crap.

19. Originally I was excited
at the idea of brining my young nephew, who is very captivated right now by cars, to see it but after seeing the trailers I've decided not to go either for myself or for him, it just looks horrible. I'm better off trying to find dvds or something of the old show.
