Dennis Wilson's CLASSIC "Pacific Ocean Blue" will FINALLY be reissued on 2-CD edition, June 10th!
Edited on Tue Apr-08-08 05:37 PM by Amerigo Vespucci
From the PRINT edition of the new Rolling Stone (so the LINK???? folks can BITE ME):

Pacific Ocean Blue Legacy Edition, 6/10

Dennis Wilson's 1977 cult classic, Pacific Ocean Blue, is returning to shelves after ten years. Demos and outtakes round out Disc One, but Disc Two is even cooler: It contains unreleased tracks from Wilson's aborted follow-up, Bambu, which he described as "a hundred times what Pacific Ocean Blue is."

3. No, it's not over-hyped at all...no "Holy Grail"...
...when it was released, it was better than any "Beach Boys" album released at the same time.

It might have been the kick in the ass that got Brian back in the game. It's just a good, solid album.

5. Great news!
I remember that record very fondly
And I am someone who has very little patience with that whole "But Brian Wilson is such a genius!" thing.
Dennis was hands down the coolest Beach Boy.
However, I have always wanted to ask Al Jardine what it was like to be a non-family member working with that tragically fucked family for so long.

6. As Todd Rundgren once said...
...Dennis suffered from the "ever-popular tortured artist effect." He wasn't Brian, but I don;t think anyone believed he had the ability to create an album like "Pacific Ocean Blue" until he actually released it.

Similarly, "Sunflower" was considered by many critics to be a renaissance of sort for the Beach Boys, and I believe the strongest track to this day is "Forever" by Dennis.

Carl...often (and accurately) described as the "heart" of the band...released two solo albums, neither of which came close to matching his work in the band. He tried to do something different...always admirable in an artist...but that "something" paled in comparison to what he did best. Dennis had the "best" solo album (and people seldom, if ever, discuss Mike Love's work outside of the band).

Sex & Drugs & Rock 'n' Roll...plus alcohol, Dennis' drug of choice...kept whatever remaining music might have existed in this man from seeing the light of day. But among the Beach Boys' best. "Pacific Ocean Blue" holds a well-deserved special place.

9. Yep, Sunflower was a great album
Edited on Tue Apr-08-08 06:42 PM by brentspeak
Critics called "Sunflower" an artistic comeback for the Beach Boys, but all the albums from "Smiley Smile" through "20/20" were quite good, too, even though they weren't considered so at the time.

The "Smiley" through "Holland" Beach Boys' era belatedly developed a well-deserved following in the early 90's when the two-fer CDs were released.

10. Something else about Dennis, evident from the "Pacific Ocean Blue" cover
Edited on Tue Apr-08-08 06:53 PM by brentspeak
Notice that after 1970, there's very few pictures of Dennis smiling. Something bad obviously was happening inside of him. Maybe it was the drugs, the drinking, the band's declining commercial fortunes (however, that all changed for the better after 1974's "Endless Summer" comp), or the public revelation of his unfortunate association with Charles Manson -- but he didn't seem very happy. Even Brian, with all his troubles during this time, still was able to smile without much difficulty.

11. All of the above, I think...
...and despite the brutal, naked honesty of Brian Wilson songs like "In My Room," I've always felt that "Forever" was a "perfect" love song...

If every word I said
Could make you laugh
I'd talk forever (together my love)
I'd ask the sky just what we had
Mmm it shone forever
(together my love my my my my my my my my my my my my my)
If the song I sing to you
Could fill your heart with joy
I'd sing forever (together my love my my my my)
Forever
Forever
I've been so happy loving you

Do do do do do do do do do together my love

Let the love I have for you
Live in your heart
And beat forever (together my love)
Forever
Forever
Ive been so happy loving you

Baby just let me sing it my baby
I wanna be singin' my baby
Baby baby baby my baby
I wanna be singin'
I wanna be singin' my baby
Oh oh oh oh
My my my my my my

So I'm goin' away
Mmm but not forever
Na na na na
I gotta love you anyway

13. I wouldn't be happy if I paid the doctor's vd bill for the Manson family!
According to Bugliosi, Dennis once paid for all of Charlie's girls to get treated for the clap.

7. AWESOME- thanks for the heads-up. My all-time favorite "lifestyle" record.
The title track, "Moonshine" and "River Song" are my faves...

And some of the Bambu tracks- like "School Girl" are great power pop tracks as well...

My copy was from a napster boot-leg, so I'll be glad to have an official release with clearer sound....

WOW! Thanks for the wonderful news. I hope it is released on vinyl as well...

I've been interested in hearing this album for a while, so it's cool that it will be getting the deluxe treatment.
