I just watched "Xanadu" or...
tried to. It's on so many 10 worst lists that I just had to see it and see how a movie with Olivia-Newton John and Gene Kelly singing and dancing could be so bad.

Well,

There's Ed Wood bad, with just enough camp to make it fun if you're stoned.

There's Clint Eastwood bad with enough good stuff to make you keep watching.

There's SciFi channel Beast of the Week bad which is simply sleep inducing.

And then there is the bone-crushingly bad, inexorably painfully bad, making you realize you have so many hours in your life and you wasted two hours of it on this shit bad, making Gigli look like a masterpiece bad, staring at a car wreck and realizing it is yours bad...

And there is "Xanadu." An entirely new level of bad. So bad one wonders how it is humanly possible.

WTF were they thinking, if indeed they were thinking at all?

1. I like Xanadu
Cheesy, yes? Silly? Absolutely. But GREAT music, IMO. And really, I do enjoy watching the movie. I own it actually

5. I'm kinda thinking of ripping the sound track...
'cause it is a good one-- Newton-John and ELO is pretty good stuff so I can't blame you for liking it.

FWIW, I kinda liked "Glitter" even though it got trashed worse than this one.

2. that was a strange period of time
the mid 70s through the very early 80s saw the confluence of several forces: rampant cocaine use; the corporatization of the entertainment industry (when the mogul system collapsed); a resurgence of individual liberty that was snuffed out after reagan took office; and rampant cocaine use.

xanadu is the direct result of cocaine.

3. At times it feels like a made-for-tv movie, but I rather enjoyed it...

It is underrated, even if there are cringe-worthy scenes. At least it tries to be original; to do something original; to say something worthwhile. It has no hidden messages or motives. Nor is it not a dug-up remake or revival...

BTW, do you know Xanadu is now a Broadway production? I mean, if they can't do anything original and have to turn pop culture flop movies to rake in drooling audiences with, there's surely a big problem afoot... what next, "Gigli on Ice"? Gobble gobble...

(and they can't even begin to equal the quality of the real movie's soundtrack...)

4. Can't Stop the Music is pretty bad too.
A Bruce Jenner classic. And, if I recall, Steve Guttenburg was also in it (he has probably the worst body of work of any actor living or dead).
