I work as a PM for a company that I'm not very happy with. I like the work but not the company.
So starting next week I will be working on a project with a competitor ( my silly sort-of boss doesn't even realize it is a competitor). This competitor has openings for PMs.
So how would you approach getting a job there? I'm thinking I could work the project as a PM and get to know my counterpart and try to feel him/her out about their company. They would also have an opportunity to judge my performance.
But I am worried that because this project is a year long they wouldn't want to hire me away and risk losing the project (if they even would - I don't know). Also, I have been applying elsewhere with no luck so far but I am really anxious to get another job so I really don't want to wait until this project is over - plus they might not have open positions by then.
1. I agree that you should keep working on the project while getting a feel for the other place.
And, if you like the work that you do where you are, just remember that the grass is NOT always greener. Depending on what you dislike so much about the current company, things COULD be worse.
2. That is true. Right now I work at home and the other place is a
1 hour commute - so there would have to be a substantial increase for me to consider it.
But my company is ridiculously unprofessional and I can't stand working in that kind of environment. In addition, my sort-of boss is constantly getting in the way of me trying to do my job and expand my skills, it's very frustrating and there doesn't seem to be hope for improvement.
