Baseball movies in which the actor in the lead role should've had a stunt double
for the baseball scenes:

• "The Pride of the Yankees," (1942), Gary Cooper as Lou Gehrig

• "The Babe Ruth Story" (1948), William Bendix in the title role

• "The Stratton Story (1949), Jimmy Stewart as Monty Stratton

• "The Pride of St. Louis" (1952), Dan Dailey as Dizzy Dean

• "The Winning Team" (1952), Ronald Reagan as Grover Cleveland Alexander

• "Fear Strikes Out" (1957), Anthony Perkins as Jimmy Piersall

Others?

1. Corbin Bernson in Major League.

::Embarrassing::

He wasn't the lead but he supposedly the star of the team.

2. I didn't think he was that bad
He sure tanked a good ground ball. :D

That movie was so fulla baseball holes, though — especially the ending.

5. Well, yeah
It's my thread. :)

Actually, I thought I might've missed some, since I haven't seen all the baseball movies. Can't remember if I saw "Babe," but I can't imagine John Goodman looking like a ballplayer. And it's been so long since I've seen "Bang the Drum Slowly" that I can't remember much of it.

Didn't look like a ballplayer at all.

8. Who in that bunch did?
Tom Berenger was about it. Wesley Snipes had good base-stealer's eyes, but not much more.

Chelcie Ross must've been cast only because he had a vague resemblance to Gaylord Perry.

7. Also not the lead in "Major League:" Chelcie Ross. Someone
should have found an actor who can at least go through the actual motions of throwing a professional baseball pitch. He looked like a baby giraffe with no brain/nerve connection to its legs.

9. Gah! Time-space convergence!
See above — though your description is much better. :hi:

I gotta admit getting a kick out of James Gammon as manager Lou Brown, even though he'd be a much better fit running a beer-league softball team.

Thinking of that, Trey Wilson was just EXcellent as the manager of the Durham Bulls. He had the jargon and mannerisms nailed, and I still bust a gut every time I see the "Lollygaggers" bit. :D

10. I LOVED James Gammon in that role!
They call to offer him the job: "oh, I dunno, Charley, I got a guy on the other line about some whitewalls, I'll talk to ya later."

Y'know who could play ball in that movie? Dennis Haysbert. People who watch "The Unit" wouldn't recognize him, though.

"Is very bad to take Jobu's rum. Is very bad."

I've seen it a time or two. :7

8:14 will forever link us, Rex. :headbang:

6. Movies in which the lead actor and the stunt double should have just traded places outright
Edited on Wed Mar-26-08 07:03 PM by Hardhead
I'll start: Anything with Jean-Claude.

(That's what I thought this thread was about at first. I may need glasses soon.)

13. 'A League of Their Own'
They had to teach her how to play ball.

But then, they also had to teach Thomas Jane before he could play Mickey Mantle in "61*," and he turned out okay. In fact, his left-handed swing was almost indistinguishable from the Mick's.

Guess it helped having this dude as his coach:
