If you had $160million to leave only to non-profits which would you choose?
And, no, THE HUMAN FUND doesn't count, Mr. Costanza.

In recent news, one of the original Microsoft employees left $160million to non profits - $65million of it to gay groups (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2004197961_weiland24.html).

If you could direct $160million to non profits - not family, friends or self - what would you choose?

3. Half to John Birch Society half to the KKK
with the caveat that only the winners, in a total membership brawl to the death, get to keep their half.

For the side that loses, their half can go to Greenpeace who will then buy platinum harpoons with which to hunt down the survivors.

charities for people are nice but from now on I'm helping animals because humans' populations are wiping them out or ruining their habitats.

7. Probably to charities I already give to: Doctors Without Borders, Habitat for Humanity,
Carter Center, CARE, Colonial Williamsburg. Also just added Interplast and Planned Parenthood this past Christmastime. Probably would consider adding a few more, such as UNICEF, ACLU, People for the American Way, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, Southern Poverty Law Center. Also to people campaigning for single-payer health care in the US - perhaps PNHP, but would need to research them a bit...

33. Two parts, actually.
One part will be backpacks to children in shelters to take their items with them, so they don't have to use paper bags and the other will be an all encompassing social justice charity in honor of my parents.

We're still hashing out the bylaws with the lawyers. I thought we would be up and running by now, actually, we were slated to launch last May, but we decided to change the fields of interest a little to include more and then we decided to up our initial contribution.

So, it's beans and rice for the Midlos for the near future. :bounce:

38. Well, I'm a sucker for anything that helps kids...
...To say I came from modest beginnings would be a huge understatement. And I'm keenly aware of how those things affect kids. For better or for worst, it's probably the reason why Sergio wears Baby Kenneth Cole and Baby Gap. :) I can't tell you now many days I wanted a good pair of shoes. Not a new, all-leather, name brand pair like I saw on TV. Just a pair that people wouldn't make fun of me for. Adults tend to look the other way, not kids though. Kids can be brutal.

39. Me, too.
It's why I volunteer in the special ed classes in two schools even though none of the Midlets attend either one. I'm a total sucker for kids. Especially, special needs kids. I keep telling the elementary school teacher that if she is missing one, she needs to come to my house, because that is where he/she will be. Sitting on the couch with me, eating ice cream, playing with the puppy and being indulged beyond measure.

I could NEVER teach special ed., though. I know that there have to be boundaries and consequences, and I just want to hug and kiss them all to death, so I would totally suck at it. I'm like the benevolent auntie. I come in, give hugs and kisses, pass out treats and leave.

but the balance would never diminish.

That said, I'd probably choose The Humane Society of the United States, Sea Shepherd and a couple others, and of course set my rescue up for life.

If I could make the bequest before I croaked, I'd probably dump an initial $5 million on Sea Shepherd contingent upon them buying a pursuit vessel and naming it after me. Be pretty cool to read that "the Sea Shepherd ship the (flvegan) deliberately collided this morning with the Japanese whaling ship..."

20. Curing malaria and other diseases in Africa.
Jim Humble at www.miraclemineral.org has a non-profit foundation to spread this mineral sodium chlorite(NaClO2), which is then activated with food acid and diluted with water or juice, in Africa to cure diseases.

Quote from website:
The answer to AIDS, hepatitis A,B and C, malaria, herpes, TB, most cancer and many more of mankind's worse diseases has been found. Many diseases are now easily controlled. More that 75,000 disease victims have been included in the field tests in Africa. Scientific clinical trials have been conducted in a prison in the country of Malawi, East Africa.

Separate tests conducted by the Malawi government produced identical 99% cure results. Over 60% of the AIDS victims that were treated in Uganda were well in 3 days, with 98% well within one month. More than 90% of the malaria victims were well in 4 to 8 hours. Dozens of other diseases were successfully treated and can be controlled with this new mineral supplement. It also works with colds, flu, pneumonia, sore throats, warts, mouth sores, and even abscessed teeth (it's the only thing that controls and cures abscessed teeth)."

32. shit man, that's a tall order!
I thought I knew, but then I read what other people posted and thought, "oh yeah.... that... oh, and that".

Anyway, I'd give tens of millions to groups involved with the production of new music. Yeah, it's what my friends and I do, but I think it goes beyond that. There's all of this saving the world and environment, and education stuff, but I think it's important that we contribute to the arts, so as to sustain a culture worth preserving. I have a friend who teaches music in Palestine - some would go to that group, for sure. I'd also give money to groups that perform new music, and probably scholarships to students so they could go study music anywhere, and not have to worry about loans.

I would also give a lot to no-kill animal rescues and sea shepperd (no, I'm not making fun of you, fivegan - I'm serious). And... crap... can't remember their name - there's a lawyers group who work on defending animals (my brother is, or was, a member) - they'd get money.

42. That seems like a lot of money
till I start thinking of nationwide causes and it seems to dry up pretty quickly.

Maybe give it to a pharmaceutical company to come up with a wisdom pill. Then maybe we could stop giving our fortune to defense contractors. I read this past week a B1 bomber crashed after the pilot ejected. That damn thing cost between 1000 and 2000 million dollars. I guess another 160 million would get them OnStar or a dvd player. Like somebody once said, "We have become very clever, but not yet wise."

A fund to promote and very heavily subsidize the spaying and neutering of pets would be a worthwhile thing I think.
