On a ball peen hammer, which part is the ball and which part is the peen?

1. Do you mean a hemispherical peening hammer....

as opposed to the point-peen hammer or chisel-peen hammer? I was taught to make gaskets for the water pump with a ball-peen hammer when I was a kid. Today, you simply buy the factory made gaskets, or even resort to using liquid sealing goop that comes in a tube. Gasket making is a lost art.

I always thought ball peen was redundant, since I hadn't heard of anything other than a ball peen hammer.

From this, I gather that if I want to relieve a certain type of stress, then I would be advised to engage in some strain hardening as a result of peening with my ball during a series of blows.

Is that right?

13. The 'peen' is the longer bit in the middle

the balls are smaller and near the back. ;)
