*ROFL* Animal lovers -- here's a mystery for you!

Our little foster puppy is apparently ANTI-BASIL. No, i'm not kidding.

Yesterday i was cooking, spicing some tomato soup. Garlic powder, no problem. Red pepper, no problem. Cumin, no problem.

I opened the basil, and she woke up and LEAPED off the couch, barking furiously!

So i chalked it up to coincidence. Until today... when the same thing happened!!! (I eat a lot of tomato soup  )

So, being a scientist, Iza did an experiment. He opened oregano and shook it -- no reaction. Opened the basil and shook it -- WOOFWOOFWOOFWOOF!!!

What the heck is going on here???

8. Can't help you on the why
but can relate to the confusion. I have a cat who freaks out at catnip...jumps straight up in the air and runs for another room. But if I've been cutting hot peppers or using my fingers to measure out some dried hot pepper into something, he drools and grabs my hand and rubs all over it and does all the stuff normal cats do with catnip. Weird.

9. Maybe the smell?
Dogs have very sensitive noses. Possibly the smell irritates his nose? My mother's dog will go into a sneezing/barking fit when she sprays certain perfumes even if he's not right next to her....

16. Yup, we've been fostering through the rescue society

You can adopt no matter where you live, actually! The last little one we had ended up in Greenwich, CT!

She's a rescue from a neglect situation -- she was living outside in the winter!

But she's just the sweetest little thing, and smart too! :D

I think I'll send her the pic and see what she thinks about having another dog. She had to put hers down last year and she is doing foster care for children. The kids would love this little one!

She's fostered through Cairn Rescue USA (http://www.cairnrescueusa.com/) if she wants to go on there to check out the adoption process.

PM me if you want more info and/or my email address! :hi:

Especially bananas. I'm eating better these days. More fruit. And the little gal seems to have gotten over her hatred of all thing fruit. No claw marks in my apples anymore. No batting around of bananas.

15. Here's a dog food that contains basil...

They claim it's an important dietary supplement. The food is for dogs with sensitive stomachs. I wonder if your little cutie would enjoy eating some?

Here's more: A common garden plant, and prevalent flavor in Mediterranean cuisine, basil has long been used to aid digestion, and ease stomach cramps and constipation. A member of the mint family, basil is also said to have a slightly sedative effect and has been recommended by some herbalists for anxiety. http://herbsspices.suite101.com/article.cfm/herbs_and_spices_for_good_health

Where did you find her? I wonder if someone tried to give her some to calm her down...

19. Thanks for the info!

Actually Iza just cooked something with basil and she didn't bark... so now we're 3 for 4. ;)

She is a foster through the rescue society. She was bought by some people who thought it would be "fun" to breed cairns. :eyes:

She and three others were being kept OUTSIDE in the winter... so it's doubtful that she was getting any kind of dietary supplements. Luckily all 4 puppies ended up at the rescue before they could be bred.

Maybe i'll try putting a shake of basil on her food tonight and see what she thinks! :D

like it's no one's business. Peppermint, wintergreen, spearmint, you name it. And of course, catnip, which is a mint as well. The other cats like catnip, but ignore the rest.

I had a cat who would meow and picket at the smell of basil. HE was a Parmesan junkie and when he could smell basil, he knew we were doin Italian and he wanted his cut pronto.

He would also come to the door when the good pizza was delivered, jumping and tapping on our legs to remind the driver, least he forget to leave several packets of his favorite dairy food.
