So, who can think of a movie sequel that spoiled an otherwise great franchise?
I was re-watching 'Aliens' tonight...I got the dvd as a Christmas present. It makes a nice companion to my copy of 'Alien.'
These two movies are as fantastic as they are different from one another.
Anyway, watching 'Aliens' again reminded me how much I hate 'Alien3.'
If you've seen it, you'd probably understand.
It completely pisses on everything that happened in 'Aliens,' to the point where it's borderline comedic. I hate it so much that I've disowned it...as far as I'm concerned, it didn't happen. Fuck 'Alien3.'
Can anybody else think of a movie sequel that ruined a great series for them?

yeah, I think that's what they were trying to do. Just trying to erase #2 out of existance. :)

Still can't believe Adrian Paul cut his hair though. :( Did anybody else notice that the ratings for the series started immediately going down after that happened?

He wanted to change his credit to "Alan Smithee", but the studio had him by the balls.'

They kept him out of production meetings

He walked out of the premier after the first 15 minutes

9. It's Oscar material by comparison.
Highlander 2 is so completely :wtf: and totally unrelated to the first movie, I can't even explain it. It's not even the horribleness (though it is deeply, deeply, flawed- we're talking Hitler's moral sense kind of flawed) it's the way that it's totally unlike the first movie, to the point where I'm not even sure the writers, directors, etc had SEEN the first movie.

Edited on Tue Jan-15-08 11:32 PM by Kutjara
What a rambling, pretentious, unfocused, interminable steaming pile they were. Where the first film really created a believable world for its characters to inhabit, the two sequels looked like they were written by a high-school student in their "Herman Hesse" phase.

The last half hour of the final film was more like outtakes from 2001:A Space Odyssey that were considered too dull.

And don't get me started on that damned fight scene with the thousand Agent Smiths. Boooooooooooooorinnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggg.

but Agent Smith survived it and was so angry that he killed Trinity in retaliation. Then the anger Son Neo felt caused him to go Super Neo for the first time.

Look out, Agent Smith, you're in for it now!
And a video clip of the classic scene...

48. I see what you mean.
I just thought it was the Wachowski Brothers' comic book background that sort of took them over in the last two films; stuff that works on the page often doesn't translate to live action. But I see from your clip that they must have been influenced a lot by Anime. And not in a good way.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of one worse.

Even the rampantly sexist characters from the golden age of s/f films don't compare, because they were products of their time. Jar Jar is an embarrassing throwback to an embarrassing cultural trend.

Is that his apologists (i.e., sycophants for whom Lucas can do no wrong) refuse to see any similarity between Jar Jar's dialogue and the classic minstrel show "Negro dialect."

39. I didn't like Aliens for one good reason.
The creature was self-contained and there was no queen. A cut scene from the original shows Brett and Dallas turning into eggs, meaning that the life cycle of the Alien was self-capable. And exponential.

None of this "kill the queen, kill the hive" nonsense.

And Alien 3 was bad.

George Clooney was horrible as Batman, and not to mention Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl! Horrible writing and acting all around.

:puke:

And Ahnuld as Dr. Freeze? WTF kind of casting decision was THAT? Did the folks in charge of casting never watch the TV show from the 60s? Dr. Freeze looked more like Patrick Stewart, instead of a 200+ pound Austrian bodybuilder.

That movie just sucked from the word go, and it totally ruined that franchise. Proof in that the franchise had to be "reborn" with Christian Bale in the lead role.

90. Trek V
I mean, the first was dull, the third was badly acted (particularly so, I mean), and the fourth was pretty silly...but the fifth installment really stank up the place. The sixth and seventh were okay, and the eighth was pretty cool. Nemesis was pretty doggone bad--despite the gratuitous dune-buggy scenes--but did not approach the sheer ham-fisted awfulness of number five.

The first is a classic. The second was a little too hokey but good. The third was just awful. It never should have been made. By the end of it I actually appreciated the acting ability that Burt Reynolds added to the first two. It was that bad.

67. I agree. It got to be shrill, bizarre, and not very funny.

until i saw it on hbo, i think it was hbo. I must have blocked it out, i love Alien, Aliens and i thought Alien Resurrection was pretty good. I also like AVP, i haven't seen that sequel yet but my bil who is a HUGH Alien fan told me he was disappointed.

73. All the Exorcist films after the first one were horrible,
though the re-cut version of the first one was magnificent.

77. The James Bond Movies with Timothy Dalton were pretty damn horrible
Brosnan was at least a step back up after that.

79. I strongly disagree with that!
I think "the living daylights" is one of the best bond films ever, while "license to kill" was one of the worst, not counting every Brosnan bond apart from "golden eye". That gives Dalton 50/50, while Brosnan is like 1 for 7 or something.... I also thought the new one really sucked - a 2 1/2 hour commercial for texas hold 'em. It's as if whatever Bond movie that came out in '84 had a climax involving a rubix cube, or one from the 90's being all about a furbie.

The James Bond Movies with Timothy Dalton Roger Moore were pretty damn horrible.

Brosnan Anything, including a rotting head of cabbage was at least a step back up after that.
