Google Ray Tomlinson, who is also the guy who brought us the @ sign in e-mail addresses.

What he did was basically take a system of exchanging messages between users of the same computer and expand it so it could be used on a network.

a government sponsored and owned network that interconnected computers all over the country.

Computers in universities were substantially the basis for the internet.
