I calmly tell them how they are wrong or that what they are saying is unprovable. (Quite often)

Usually the people who "attack" my posts are people who enjoy shit stirring anyway and Spock really annoys them because it removes the emotion from the exchange. ;-)

I love a lively conversation. The key word is "conversation." I love to be able to speak my mind, pause, listen to one's point of view, digest the information, then go from there. But increasingly, speaking one's point of view is met with conversation stopping insults by many people here. And since I have always been one to stand up for myself, I am afraid that I have answered insults hurled at me in like kind. It's something that I'm not too proud of. In fact, the longer I have been on DU, the more I have changed, and not for the better. Maybe it is these times of extreme uncertainty in which we live. Maybe it is the avalanche of ill will that has permeated this board. Often times it disgusts me, as to how thousands of people who are supposed to be progressive come here and immediately start feeding on one another. It disgusts me that I have not been immune to it. I imagine that many other DUers feel the same way; that many of us here are really nice people who have succumbed to a degree to the snarky, back-biting behavior that passes for discourse on an internet message board.

My wish for the holidays and beyond is that we work harder to be civil to each other. As I see it, without civility, then what does life itself mean?
