4. Looks like what the doctor ordered.
Innumerable Victorian women were prescribed the drug for relief of menstrual cramps and vague aches and used it to achieve the pallid complexion associated with tuberculosis (frailty and paleness were particularly prized in females at the time).

:D

17. they also ate arsenic
and they used lead-based facial make up to give them that pale look. women who were very fashionable had their faces "enameled" with this lead-based crap when they were older.

In John Singer Sargent's painting, Madame X, you can see where the enameling ends at her ears (they're not enameled.)

anyway, I didn't know they still made laudanum. Makes me think of Xanadu and Kubla Khan and stately pleasure domes.

I do know something that could help but it's illegal if it's not medicinal, but in this case it would be anyway but it would still be illegal in most states and all states federally. You might try some yoga stretches if your head isn't hurting too badly.

3. Yes indeed!
Take it 4x/day for 6 months, then stop suddenly. You'll get cramps.

13. No, 'fraid not.
But it's good she has something that works for her. Like I always say, if men had to deal with menstrual cycles, hysterectomies would be done on every street corner.

18. I may be being dumb here but you DO know what Laudanum is?
Opium or Morphine in alcohol. Yes, it will control pain; with the added bonus of addiction.

romance novels is I pick up little tidbits of info like that which I might otherwise not have come across. (Also, in the movie "Long Day's Journey into Night" Katharine Hepburn played a laudanum addicted mother of a Victorian family.) :)

Sorry if I freaked you out with my earlier post. I forgot to put the word NO in the subject line. have NO laudanum.... LOL

20. Where will you get it? Paregoric might work if it is gut related.
Back in the 'old' days of the '70s, paragoric and a lot of other meds were kept unlocked and available to staff in the hospital I worked. Nothing like an opiate to stop the gut from over working.

Now, if the 'cramps' you speak of are a gender specific type, I have no idea.
