I had to bite my tongue tonight.

I was at a book club meeting, and the conversation turned to unions, fair wages, and the like. This woman who lives in a ridiculously large McMansion--for just her and her husband--said they couldn't possibly have had union construction workers build their house, "or we would never have been able to afford it". I said "Then, you couldn't afford it. If people can't afford things, maybe they don't need them." Then she said something about how all their laborers were "illegals", who "don't think they need all those union fringe benefits".

I saw where things were headed and just clammed up. Yeah, God forbid we pay people a living wage!!

I really, truly hate selfish people like that. Unions are one of the most productive things we've ever had in this country. They built the middle class that created and sustained most of American Prosperity for almost a century. What the fuck does that woman know?

I would have been goading her into discussions all night that would have been clearly over her head, and I would have had people either feeling sorry for her or laughing at her for being such a fool.
