Long hair rant
File this one under 'Things That Irrationally Annoy SallyMander'

(Right next to people who order food using the phrase "give me".)

My hair is really long -- down to my waist. I have now had at least 4 friends/acquaintances/strangers(!) ask me if i am going to donate it to Locks of Love. Don't get me wrong, that's a really nice charity, and if i ever cut it off i would probably donate. But... right now i like it attached to my head. Does this make me a terrible and selfish person? (Rhetorical, don't answer that.) Do we all have a responsibility to society to grow long hair, cut it off, and make wigs out of it?

If so, get going people, i'm way ahead of you!!! :D

14. I try to remember
that they don't know i've heard it before... it could be the case that i was thinking of cutting it, and hadn't heard of the charity, and then they'd be doing a good thing. Or something. :)

2. Tell them most of the hair LoL gets winds up getting auctioned.
Adult hair generally isn't suitable for children's wigs, so most of it gets sold to pay their (rather high) overhead.

9. I didn't know that!
Aha, now i have a (logic-based) response! :)

Out of curiosity, do you know why it is that adult hair isn't suitable? Is it because it's coarser than kids' hair?

10. I guess so.
Also, a lot of it would be damaged, color treated, etc.

:P

Sorry people can be asshats. I wish my hair would grow that long. I would keep it on my head, too.

And as much as I'd love to do something nice for someone else... I still ain't cutting my hair. That's just how it is, and how it's gonna be.

24. Thanks. :P I do what I can.
Actually, I was getting some pretty bad split ends, just had to trim off four or five inches... side effect of working in an open-air warehouse in Florida heat I suppose. But since I'm neither working in a warehouse nor in Florida heat anymore, hopefully that won't happen again.

7. My dear SallyMander!
You are not a selfish or terrible person!

Oh. My. God.

Keep your hair, and tell your friends to go to hell, or something!

None of us have a responsibility to grow our hair long just so we can cut it off and donate it!

 for you!

13. It's _your_ hair. Would they want you to donate your brain or heart before you're done with 'em?
Edited on Mon Dec-03-07 01:27 PM by Heidi
My hair was far past the middle of my back three years ago, and when I went to get it cut, the coiffeuse asked me if I wanted to donate it, and I did, and so did my two goddaughters who got their hair cut and colored during the same "Girls' Day Out." But for heaven's sake, that's a personal decision and no one has the right to pressure you to do something you're not ready to do. You've no more responsibility to donate your hair than you do your eggs or your DNA. :grr:

And, by the way, self concern isn't always a bad thing; it's part of what makes us individuals and ensures our survival as individuals, no matter what the preening, judgmental, always-correct do-gooders might think.

Until it fell out due to chemo. I just purchased a wig for her. Losing her hair was devastating for her even at the age of four. Bless you and all those who donate hair to Locks of Love.

Edited on Mon Dec-03-07 01:36 PM by LeftyMom
I can't seem to get it any longer than that before the ends start to get scraggly.

My best female friend has hair long enough to sit on (and it's crazy thick too) so she gets the question even more than I do. At least she did out here, now that she moved to West Virginia she gets people assuming she's some kind of fundamentalpatient any time she wears a skirt or dress.

demand now that obnoxious people rudely expect you to donate it?

And others might chase you down the street to buy it?

Still have it. It took a long while to grow that shit.

Seriously, I didn't even think about Wigs for Kids or Locks of Love when I cut it. Slipped my mind.
