Upscale: try Trattoria Del'Arte (7th Ave below 57th Street,)
or
Cozy: La Dolce Vita (Spring Street, just East of 6th Ave...SoHo.)

I'm a bit outta restaurant circulation these days, but these two are still around and I vouch for them. :9 Both places are mere seconds away from the subway.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of suggestions!

Hands down the best pizza and pasta north of Little Italy.
