So, if you can, stay off the roads.

1. Yup. As an actual alcoholic, I never went out on the Wed before T-day.
Amateurs mess everything up. :D Course, now I hardly go to bars at all, except to see bands.

2. I live in a small town now
so driving would be just dumb. But yeah, tonight's just a dumb night to go out in a car.

17. You're in Philly - where do you go see bands play?
I haven't been to philly in awhile because they still had indoor smoking. But I do love places like Tin Angel, Khyber, North Star and the venues like TLA, Electric Factory, etc.

I'm a big music nut and would love to get back into checking out bands in Philly but most of my friends don't really go out that much anymore.

BTW - you going to that Hooters concert? It should be good!

24. Ha! The Hooters!
I was such a huge Hooters fan when I was like 11. :) No, I don't think I'll go to the concert, but I'll always remember them fondly!

As far as music venues, I like Johnny Brenda's a lot, I like the TLA (which is now the Fillmore TLA and kind of weird inside), the Tower is great (saw Elvis Costello there last year again - GREAT show). I have fond memories of the Troc but I'm getting a little old for that now. :)

If you want to spend a few dollars, World Cafe Live is a BEAUTIFUL venue with great acts. The shows are expensive and even more so if you have dinner there too, but it's a really nice place with good sound.

The Khyber is an old favorite, but the sound has always been shit in there, and I really can't deal with the crowdedness in my old age. :D There's a place in Mt Airy (I think) called NXNW (North by Northwest) that is a great place to see a show.

Anyway, you totally should go to some shows! Remember once you get out of the city limits, smoking is still allowed indoors, so stay out of the suburbs and you'll be smoke free!

25. We saw Robert Fripp at the World Cafe a few weeks ago
and loved it.

Regardless of the smoking ban I was never a fan of suburb bars

3. I'm driving to Detroit from Akron.
Hopefully the highways will be okay. Anyway, I drive better when I'm drunk. (No, not really.)

4. I'm driving to Monterey.
And, curiously, drive the stretch of highway where James Dean was killed in a car accident. :scared:

I'll be careful; it's the other asshole drivers I worry about.

5. and fires tomorrow
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,104224,00.html

Thursday, November 27, 2003

Allstate Insurance said 15 homes burned to the ground around the country last Thanksgiving as a result of the improper use of turkey fryers. The product-testing company Underwriters Laboratory Inc. (search) refuses to certify as safe any turkey fryer model currently on the market.

In 1999, the last year figures were available, the National Fire Protection Association (search) reported that 500 fires involving a deep-fat fryer took place around the nation, resulting in over $6.8 million dollars in damage.

http://www.columbusdispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2007/11/21/turkburn.ART_ART_11-21-07_A1_J58HSTQ.html?sid=101

Every Thanksgiving, firefighters respond to nearly twice the average number of home-cooking fires.

In grimmer terms, that's an average of 1,450 fires causing 15 deaths and 41 injuries each Thanksgiving, says the U.S. Fire Administration.

"Most often it's unattended cooking," said Battalion Chief Doug Smith of the Columbus Fire Division. "People forget. They're just going outside for a minute and … "

8. That's why you always set up the turkey fryer outside
away from any buildings.

Mmmm Deep Fried Turkey. :9

Best way to have a moist bird besides brining.

9. Just remember one thing when you deep fry: "displacement"
My parents forgot about that the first time they deep-fried one. Abbreviated scene:

1. Dad drops turkey into fryer.
2. OMG, too much oil--small fireball erupts.
3. Dad grabs the turkey with tongs to take it OUT of the grease, drops turkey on lawn.
4. Hilarity ensues as my parents chase the turkey, greased pig-style, around the lawn.

They eventually got the oil level right, cleaned off the turkey and got that sucker deep-fried. Subsequent attempts have been much more successful (though considerably less entertaining).

23. I tried convincing my mother to let us fry the turkey this year
I even have Alton Brown's Fry Turkey Fry episode of Good Eats burned to a DVD to illustrate safer frying with his turkey derrick. My mom nixed the idea, but she is letting me brine the turkey.

14. There are some things it is not good to be professional at.
Not good to be an amateur at it, either. Sometimes abstinence really is the best thing.

16. naturally. still, for a lot of Americans, Wednesday night is the beginning
of a 4 day weekend, including all the college kids who are forced to go home. so, what with families getting together after a hard travel slog, the bars are usually packed with people who don't know their driving limits (or care)

Ten minutes to pick something up, ten to get gas, an hour on the road, stop at Borders for 30 minutes and pick up some early X-Mas presents, 15 to get a haircut...

Ehh, I should roll in well before the worst drivers are out in force.

I will be smoking a fat cigar all the way down, though.

26. Around here, the freeways have been jammed all day and night...
...as the local lunatics all make a scramble to get out of town, only to be replaced by a completely different crowd of lunatics from out of town. I'm hoping there'll be a net reduction in overall lunatic numbers, though, and that the rest of the week will be blessed by empty roads and clear skies.

Yeah, I still believe in Santa, too.
