Can someone explain to me the appeal of "Grey's Anatomy"?
Edited on Fri Nov-16-07 10:52 AM by PeterU
My wife watches it. Yesterday, after "The Office" had finished (great episode, BTW), I came into the bedroom where the wife was watching Grey's. And I just don't get it.

Each episode of that show always revolves around:
a. Doctors having sex
b. Doctors having to treat some weird freakish disease or accident that would never happen in real life but is added for dramatic effect
c. More Doctors having sex
d. Doctors talking about having sex
e. Some dramatic realization by one of the characters, either about their interaction with one of the patients who has the freakish disease or was in the freakish accident, or about the doctors having sex
f. Doctors having sex with different doctors
g. Music montage showing the doctors having their special interactions with their patients and/or having sex with each other
h. Long, overly dramatic and long winded monologue speech by one of the doctors, possibly about what they've come to observe about one of their special patients or their interaction with each other. Or having sex with other doctors.
i. Again, doctors having sex
j. Roll credits.
k. Coming up on next week's "Grey's Anatomy": More freakish illnesses that don't really happen in real life. And plenty of doctors having sex.

Is it just me, or is this possibly the most overrated television show on TV right now?

6. As a woman - the appeal of that show lasted about 10 minutes
Yeah, Dempsey turned out to not be the dweeb he was in all those high school flick movies he did. But I'd rather watch him in "Can't Buy Me Love" or "Loverboy" than in Grey's Anatomy.

Oh, and that lead female charcter played by Ellen something - I find absolutely no appeal in her whatsoever.

2. I'd rather try pulling my teeth than watch it.
The five minutes I generally get stuck with while waiting for "Big Shots" are bad enough as it is.

3. What's wrong with people having sex?
I've never watched the show, by the way. But, maybe some people like the sexual situations?

4. Because there's always boring talking accompanying the sex
About how they are all torn and emotionally conflicted. About having sex.

10. LMAO Brilliant!
I laughed out loud.

Having never watched GA, I don't know if it's true or not, but the summary is HEElarious.

Based on your summary, I might have to watch a couple of episodes just to see the pattern unfold. :-)

FYI - I think it's an odd/terrible(?) thing to do to a classic anatomy book.

11. People like to learn about new freak illnesses.
I'm sure the sex has nothing to do with the show's appeal.

17. There's another show I haven't seen...
I tend to stay away from new shows until they're in the reruns...partly because my schedule doesn't allow for much prime-time viewing, and partly because they look like such garbage.

19. House isn't new. It's in it's 3rd or fourth season. Hugh Laurie
is a big hit. It's a fun show, and House is an interesting character. He's really pithy. There are reruns on USA network.

...Bertie Wooster.
Diseases are cool and all, but cranky people are a downer.
Bertie Wooster was never cranky.

I heart Bertie Wooster

13. I think it has something to do with the fact that it doesn't have serial killers
who repeatedly murder white women largely b/c the entertainment industry doesn't have to ask for much in the way of acting when they're already dead. Plus, the whole crime scene investigation thing is like--old, old, old. It is a show about people who are alive versus dead kids at the hands of pedophiles, vampires sorely in need of dental work or pseudo investigative programs like 48 Hours.

Its one hour of mindless TV. So what?

16. I think I know why people like it:
The doctors are screw-ups in their personal lives, and for some reason, it makes alot of people feel better to know that a doctor can screw up their lives as badly as the viewer can.

Other than that, I cannot fathom why anyone wastes a moment of a wonderful life watching that show.

18. lol
Yeah, that about sums it up.

I think I can count on one hand how many "decent" shows are on TV, and only one of them is on network TV--The Office.

The rest is comedy central.

21. My Wife And Daughters Love It

I absolutely despise it. What a bunch of self-centered, neurotic, whiney, fuck-happy characters.

I've also given up on "House." Talk about a worn-out formula: patient comes in with a bizarre disease, young doctors bounce around for almost an hour incorrectly diagnosing it while House acts like a complete horse's ass, and then House solves it all in the last five minutes of the show. What a tragic waste of a fine actor like Hugh Laurie....

the appeal of Seinfeld-- also not understood by a large part of the population.

Or football.

It didn't look very good from the promos when it first aired on TV and it looked like overrated and stupid. I don't watch the show but I watched part of an episode while staying with my cousin and my initial preconceptions about the show were vindicated -the script was cliched and predictable, the acting was terrible and everything about the show was awful. I think it has to rank as one of the worst shows I have seen on television

I don't understand why it is so popular either.

My sister finds it incredibly stupid as well so thankfully we don't have to watch it when she comes over.

And this from someone who absolutely loves Desperate Housewives

26. It sux....
The few times I've watched a bit of the show it seems to be heavy on soundtrack and light on plot. And I hate shows with "quirky" characters.

One partial episode I watched showed one of the character "holding back" on delivering her baby for some ludicrous reason. Yeah, like you could do that. :eyes:
