"Britney Spears may have failed drug test"...and a nation wept.

http://thesuperficial.com/2007/11/britney_spears_may_have_failed.php

Reports have been circulating over the weekend that Britney Spears failed a drug test. However her friends and handlers are saying it was a false reading. They claim it was Britney’s prescription for Provigil – used to treat her narcolepsy – that botched the test. TMZ did some investigating and learned that these claims are bogus:

In generic drug testing -- the type performed on Britney -- there is not a special screening for Provigil.
In addition, we know the tests actually performed on Spears (until last week) all came back negative, and she had been taking Provigil before that.

Some people ask me why I don’t do any investigative journalism. Who says I don’t? I scour the internet for a good 10-15 minutes everyday looking for celebrity photos that give you, the reader, a boner. Or for you ladies they give you further reason to doubt your appearance and self-worth. I’m a national treasure; I get it. Anyway, I do a lot of hard journalism in my boxers before I get tanked at noon. So, ask me that question again when my Pulitzer arrives. In the meantime, I’ve got a lunch appointment – with destiny. And by destiny I mean a dump truck full of bourbon.

2. This poor girl......
needs to go home and figure out who she is outside of who the public thinks she is. I have been through the rough years as well when you try so hard to make things happen because you know everyone has been watching. Obviously not on this level, but she needs to address some serious issues and get on with living her life as a woman. Not as Brittany the train wreck and pop star. I feel for her. Denial is a horrible thing, especially when you have whole groups of people making sure you stay in it. (sigh) I cant wait for the news to start covering real news and quit covering this girls every single move through Malibu.

6. Back when I was a celebrity
life was a bit wild and crazy, but I would always study for a drug test. Never failed one because of that.

having taken Provigil in the past, I know that on very very very sensitive drug screens, it can show up as an amphetamine. I know because a urine test of mine came back positive for amphetamine and I had taken drug tests in the past (while on provigil) and they've come up negative. The screen I did had a higher sensitivity (or lower...whatever makes it more sensitive). The hoops I had to go through between my MD, the lab company, MY JOB just to prove that I wasn't on speed and hadn't done speed.

Provigil and other drugs like adderall (a true amphetamine) and ritalin often have people test positive for amphetamine on drug tests. I had to carry around a stack of sealed, notarized statements from my MD for the few years I was on provigil in the event that a drug test came back positive. Even though I had listed it on the front of the form of "Rx and OTC drugs I routinely take", and it's known to occasionally cause false-positives for amphetamines, doesn't matter. I had to jump through more hoops than a dog at a championship show.

On edit--I just did a quick google search and it seems that some sites list provigil as making false pos for amphetamine, and other say it is chemically dissimilar to amphetamine and won't come up positive. HOwever, provigil is a drug that is used recreationally by some people and some drug tests DO test for whatever the active metabolite in provigil is. So you may disregard my previous statement, or not. All I know is that my pee-pee test came back positive for amphetamines, and I was told it was related to my provigil, and once I provided the lab/my job proof of a legal Rx for provigil, I was given another pee test that was less sensitive and I was cleared.

12. Wait - it's a class IV drug - which means she's basically ABUSING Provigil
http://www.provigilweb.org/taking-provigil.htm

Can I take Provigil if I’m a professional athlete?

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) included modafinil, which is sold in the U.S. under the name Provigil, on its 2004 List of Prohibited Substances and Methods. Olympic athletes as well as professional athletes participating in other sporting events around the world mayl be disciplined if they test positive for modafinil.

Can I become addicted to Provigil?

Provigil is a Schedule IV controlled substance. This means that Provigil may be a target for people who abuse medicines or street drugs. However, certain chemical properties of modafinil, the active ingredient in Provigil, reduce its potential for abuse. Because the drug is insoluble in water, it cannot be readily injected. Also, it degrades with heating, which severally hampers its effectiveness if smoked.

It is advised to keep your Provigil in a safe place. Giving your prescription of Provigil to anyone is against the law.

I would think if Ms Spears was a sufferer of Narcolepsy that perhaps we would have known about this by now.

BTW: This is also prescribed for ADD/ADHD - which I could see Brittney having

Modafinil

Modafinil is a eugeroic drug generally prescribed to treat narcolepsy, made by the pharmaceutical company Cephalon Inc. It is not a typical stimulant and is often described as a "wakefulness promoting agent." The drug is sometimes prescribed off-label for ADD/ADHD. In mass-media advertisements and websites, Cephalon markets the drug for improving "alertness" and reducing "excessive daytime sleepiness."

Or Perhaps she's using it for this:

Experimental uses

Cocaine/amphetamine addiction

In January 2005, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania published the results of a small study, which found that modafinil may help recovering cocaine addicts fight their addiction. Similar published case reports suggest that modafinil might also be useful in the treatment of amphetamine addiction.
