Truck crash kills 1,000 turkeys
By Tim Harlow, Star Tribune
Last update: November 12, 2007 – 12:58 PM

A semitrailer truck hauling live turkeys rolled over on a Twin Cities freeway ramp early today, killing most of its cargo and tying up traffic for hours.
The truck was carrying 900 to 1,000 turkeys to the Jennie-O processing plant in Faribault, Minn. when it flipped over around 1 a.m. while navigating a curve on a ramp leading from eastbound Hwy. 10 to southbound Hwy. 35W in Mounds View, said Pat Solheid, a spokeswoman for the Willmar, Minn.-based Jennie-O Turkey Store, Inc.

Authorities shut down the ramp for nearly eight hours as they cleaned up the mess and uprighted the trailer. The closure created long delays for motorists during the morning rush hour, creating back ups of up to two miles back to Hwy. 65 were reported, said Jake Martin of the Regional Transportation Management Center.

Motorists were detoured to north I-35W. Many then turned around at the next exit, which created slow downs and congestion on the southbound side of the highway. Traffic was backed up from Hwy. 10 to Lexington Avenue in Circle Pines, Martin said.

The truck driver, a 61-year-old man from Clara City, Minn., was injured in the accident, the State Patrol said. He suffered only "bumps and bruises," Solheid said.

Most of the turkeys aboard the truck were killed, Solheid said.

The accident is under investigation.

1. You know a month doesn't go by that I don't think of that quote.
That's some damn fine writin' there.

As for your post, I can only say "good." When it comes right down to it, folks, it's either gonna be the turkeys or it's gonna be us. The sooner we get rid of them, the sooner we can quit listening to all their gobble-dee-gook.

9. It's a running joke at our house.
Whenever one of us goofs up on something, we say, "As god is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly". It has lightened many a moment.

2. There's the other 'snort your drink thru your nose' line from that episode.
"Not every turkey makes it through Thanksgiving, sir."

3. *Snort*
That is one of my all-time-favorite sitcom lines. Remember Les Nesman's play-by-play as the turkeys fell? "Oh, the humanity!" One of the funniest sitcom scenes ever. Still makes me laugh until I cry.

6. Welcome Sheltiemama
Then there's Les' account of the turkey counter-attack. Funniest 25 minutes tv moments ever.

10. So, the turkeys were killed...on their way to a "processing" plant.
Irony!
