MARATHON!!! 4:43:47
Edited on Sun Nov-11-07 12:43 AM by underpants
Age 40 M

Chip Time 4:43:47
Gun Time 4:51:53

First 13.1 Miles 2:22:05 <-- that is an 10:50 mile average
Second 13.1 Miles 2:21:42 <-- that is an 10:49 mile average
20th Mile Gun Time 3:45:28 (LESS the 8:06 gun to chip difference) 3:39:28
Chip time 4:43:47 = 1:04:19 or a 10:22 mile average

I CLOSED!!!

Wow what a spectacular experience. I saw runners of every shape, size, and description. Funny thing is even as I "sized them up" the common element was that they clearly had done the miles and the calves--you can tell by the calf muscles.

I saw some BIG BOYS bigger than me and they were just cruising along. I passed one of the biggest individuals (rock solid just HUGE) that I have ever seen at mile 25. He had been ahead of me the entire way.

These two women in black kept running/walking and they were forever around me no matter what I did. I complimented them on their "plan" they laughed.

Mile 16- the Lee Bridge one entire mile of hate and pain. Uphill sloooow uphill and a cold 10 MPH wind directly into our faces. I saw many shoulders drop and people just stop running. Several people laid out on the ground just past it (Oregon Hill) trying to stretch out. Horrible.

Mile 17 big ass IMPEACH sign held by some guy- I gave him the thumbs up and said "Impeach"

Mile 22 the Hash House Harriers were out.... yes I had a bit of BEER on my first marathon.

Great amount of people out just to wish us well.

26 miles 385 yards is a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG way. I really pushed it the last..well the entire way (except for the first 5 miles or so).

It actually came off. I actually did this thing. WOW.

HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

7. 250 lbs. of rolling thunder
I weighed in yesterday morning at 255 (LOTS of eating and less running the last two week....yeah that's it) I weighed in after I got home at 250.

In order to qualify for Boston -I, me a 40 year old male would have to run a 3:20. That is 8 minute miles, all of them. Not likely. Plus-truth be told Boston is huge and a big deal but most competitive runners will do one and that's it. They truck you out and dump you off in an often mud field for a 3 hour wait, just not worth it other than to SAY that you ran one.

NYC on the other hand is considered a fun time and you can qualify OR apply and you are guaranteed to get accepted by the third year. I am going to apply as soon as they open it up.

BTW-check out the Richmond marathon site they already have a countdown to next year going (box on the top right)

I started Jan.30th at the doctors feeling horrible and weighing 290. I was down to 250 yesterday after the run. I signed up for this marathon Feb. 3rd not really understanding what I was getting into.

11. Reviews of the tracking system... not so good
My wife was supposed to get text messages about my progress. In addition to them ONLY (how much does that cost?) pads at the start, 13.1, 20, and the finish she got NO TEXTS.

I can't even look up my own bib number nor none of the ones of people I met on the way--fellow "Big Boy" I talked to walking up a hill in mile 19 his exclamation of getting to mile 13 and wondering "WHY AM I SO FAT!?!?!?" got a huge laugh out of some spectators. :bounce:

I can't find out how he did.

Sucks.

369 days 20 hours to the next Richmond marathon

13. Good for you
Running a marathon in underpants. Gotta be some kind of record there.

I did some road racing in my younger days, 10K and a couple of 15K runs. And while a marathon never really appealed to me, here I am pushing 50 and contemplating doing the Seattle to Portland bike ride in July.

Congratulations again. Let me introduce you to your new best friend: Ibuprofen.

Thanks.

27. Never had any wall issues
of course I took it really really easy at the beginning. Lots of people were falling off near the end. I started with the trailing cop car right behind me at the start so I actually passed about 1,300 people along the way. Most of it was in the last 6-8 miles I would guess. It didn't seem like I was passing THAT MANY people.

What a major, MAJOR accomplishment. You should feel very proud of yourself. I hope your little Josie had a big hug for you at the end.

My brother ran the Chicago Marathon a few years ago. He called me at the finish and, at first, all I could hear was wheezing and panting. I thought it was an obscene phone call.

MrShine ran in the Big Sur Half Marathon today and did great, too. He had some calf issues, but he pushed through and finished in a respectable 2:56. He's almost 52, btw. Not too shabby. :D

21. What a great way to spend a Sunday!!!!!
I'm getting ready for the Marathon season here in Spain myself. The first half of the year is on the 25th of this month in Cordoba. Starting in December, we have a half and a full each month throughout the winter. For our running group, it all culminates in May when we do the 101K "La Legion" run in Ronda. Good times. You should post a pic or two.

29. Hell yeah!
Well done!

thats a great time for a first marathon. and running the second half faster than the first, shows you really did your training right. now you can say you've done something less than .1% of Americans will ever do.

Just a warning, marathons can be quite addictive. avoid the "post marathon depression", by signing up for another one.

Yeah I really pushed it the last 6 (I thought I had a shot at 4 1/2 oh well) but then I could because of the training. My best friend couldn't finish but he still came to our party. Now that I have done one I can run/train looser and do more stuff experimentally like trail running and more speed work (I did the basic basic Hal Higdon Novice system) which will make it even more fun. The Richmond Marathon already has a counter up for next year.

Thanks Allegro I appreciate the comments.

No depression but my wife so overbought for our party that I have been eating just so the food doesn't go to waste for the last 2 days straight---plus I am unbelieveably hungry.

I am going to go out for a walk now just to get the muscles worked back up. I stretched yesterday but man the outside of my thighs and the outside of my calves (the lower part) are really sore.

I kid, I kid!

Congrats! That's a hell of an achievement!

I don't think I could do that even with Freddy Kruger chasing me. I'd run for a while, then just be like "Okay, I give up. Kill me" after six miles or so...

38. Training
I have told everyone and my wife can back me up on this--literally if you follow the training actually do the mileage no matter at what speed if you follow the schedule (I actually skipped a few of the longer midweek runs) the rest takes care of itself. And I did it completely solo, I am sure it is easier (and more fun) to do the group training thing. Next year I think I may join up with them.

It was like about mile 18 when I really finally got that this was going to happen...then the battle with the hurt and trying to finish faster got going.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!
