Saw a NatGeo Channel special on the Apollo moon missions tonight
Watching the footage 40 years later, I find myself thinking, "I just cannot fucking believe we did that."

Oh, and one of the guys on the pre-moon landing mission (first orbit around the moon) applied for life insurance three days before blasting off. He was turned down. YA THINK?? I'm sure the agent just said, "You have got to be fucking kidding me."

1. Yes, it was pretty amazing
I visited the Johnson Space Center in Houston a few years ago and was pretty overcome by how primitive the technology seemed to be, yet how incredible it all was at the time.

It was a phenomenal achievement. It proved what can be done when you throw shitloads of money at a project and neocons aren't around to steal all the dough.

3. And when you're crazy enough to persevere
despite enormous risk, loss and death. I wonder if we'll see such courage again.

5. I wish I'd seen that....
I remember very well having TV's rolled into the classroom when I was a kid to watch every Apollo launch, and I certainly remember my parents waking us up in the middle of the night to come down and watch men walk on the moon.

It was a big deal in the national conscience - we haven't had anything comparable since then.
