6. Yeah. Here are the basics:

Apparently this is the season for breakdowns of all possible varieties.

About a month and a half ago, the kitchen wiring shorted out and left us with a damaged refrigerator and no power in half the kitchen. We got the fridge fixed thanks to some help from a friend, and replaced the breaker. Now the wiring is out in the kitchen again, so we're running the fridge with one of those long orange heavy-duty extension cords. We have no power in any of the other kitchen outlets.

Then we tried to light the furnace pilot light last week because it's getting really cold here at night and we live in an old mobile home with really crappy insulation. The pilot refuses to light. Both my uncle and Oeditpus Rex seem to think it probably needs a new thermocoupler (a relatively inexpensive part), but we're having trouble finding out for sure because (1) we aren't sure how to figure out which part we need for it, and (2) we cannot afford to hire a heating/cooling specialist to come look at it and/or fix it for us. Both of us are clueless about furnaces, and fearful of "messing" with it further. Therefore, I've been bundling up my son and myself into the bedroom at night with every spare blanket in the house and sleeping in our fleece jackets, trying to stay warm at night. ThinkBlue1966 has been working extra hours at night, so she isn't here.

Also, we lost the car about a month ago when the transmission died, and although the city bus service is adequate (barely) for getting me back and forth to classes during the day, it doesn't run on Sundays and I have no way to get a ride to the grocery store today. I have $298 in Food Stamps on my card, and no way to get to the store to spend them. We have absolutely nothing left in the freezer for dinner tonight, so I'm stressing about that too.

There are lots of other smaller things as well, but those are the "biggies". What I really need right now is a week or two of good fortune, for once. :hug:

who know how to fix a furnace? We've had our ancient furnace go out on very cold nights a few times, and the furnace guys were always pretty nice about it (and not outrageously expensive...(

I also bet there are some agencies or churches in your area who could find someone who would help fix it for free or low cost.

Hate to think of you folks being cold.
