I feel like I could sleep for a solid day and a half and still not feel rested.

6. My dear KitchenWitch...
It's not just sleep deprivation, sweetie...

It's the aftermath of the extreme emotional overload from all that, plus all the other shit that's going on in your life right now...

I think that once things settle down in that sphere you will feel much better...

You'll be able to catch your breath as it were, and your sleep will benefit you more completely ...

Things on the other front are seemingly okay too.

8. I've been thinking about you. Wondering what part of Irvine you're in.
Another welcome to Southern California, my friend.

Did you have trouble breathing? How about that ash?

I haven't read earlier threads. How close was it?

10. I am in the north end of Northwood
Fire got about a mile from us when it burned the outbuildings at the nursery nearby.

I did have a lot of trouble breathing. The ash is AWFUL.

I hope this only happens every 10 years or so, or I am going to have to be locked up as a danger to myself.

BTW, very good to see you!

12. Good to be seen.
Don't have much time (or patience) for message boards anymore. Kinda makes me sad. I miss this community.

In 1980 or 81, there were horrible fires. Not this bad, but one had to brush thick ash off the car in order to drive, it was hard to breath, and for three days the sky was red, even at high noon.

And the weirdest thing. One day I was standing outside, I guess I was just feeling the atmosphere of it all, and noticed thousands and thousands of big dragonfiles, flying west to east as if they were islanders running from flowing lava. Very strange.

9. You've been stressed to the max and that tears you down
more than the most intense physical labor. Treat yourself to something you enjoy. God knowth you need it.

15. You're welcome, K-W
Girl, you're suffering from post trauma; inability to fully rest and sleep is one of its primary symptoms. P-T is the mind's refusal to let go of a extreme experience because it can't process it. This is why I said do something you enjoy to give yourself and that mind a break.

Also consciously think about the experience, but do it in relaxed surroundings, a place you like to be. By the way, soothing music helps, too when you're thinking about it. Talk to other people who have been through the experience. In short, drag the demons out of the basement into the light; they won't be as scary.

The wisest thing I've ever heard about dealing with P-T is learning how to remember it without reliving it.

Most important thing - be kind to yourself.

17. Being on guard for your house and your safety, breathing in crappy air,
well, that's going to take a toll, Kitchey.

Your mind is telling you that you shouldn't be so tired, you just got up, etc.

But your body, which in this case is the wiser of the two, is saying, hey, I still need some rest.

Listen to your body, my friend, and give it what it needs right now.

And once again, I am so glad you and your family and your house made it through.

18. As a fire veteran, its a form of PTSD
Edited on Sat Nov-03-07 04:35 PM by Capn Sunshine
Go with it. Spend a day sleeping. You were scared and on edge for like days; you probably didn't sleep soundly. Happens to everyone who is close to the fire. Then we get the same conditions two weeks later, and that cranks it all up again. Drink a couple of tall boys and take a nap. Then , even if you already did, when you wake, take a long shower and have some caffiene. Same thing will happen after your first big earthquake. That takes months to get back to normal.

23. I am, safety is a beautiful thing.
Both my daughter and I are still dealing with chest congestion. Today's temperature inversion did not really help that much, but it is a lot better than it was even a few days ago.

24. Have been thinking about you all!
Read that you had to do the Rx sign in thing to get pseudoephedrine. (thanks a lot you stupid meth heads morans! :grr: )

Bigelow Mint Medley tea is good for opening up the chest (peppermint, spearmint and yellow grass)

And to feel better, a peppermint tea and chamomile mix does wonders for relaxing.

Hope we do get together in December! :hi:

Edited on Sat Nov-03-07 11:19 PM by KC2
I actually slept 10 and 1/2 hours, total, after sleeping in this morning! Whew! I haven't slept that much in one shot in over 6 months! My husband asked, "What made you sleep so much?" I just told him I didn't know. It would be so difficult to explain it all. Hope you can get the rest you need, soon, too... and feel better!
