Ok people, time to name some of your favorite local/regional bands
Jim the Mule is a good band around here. And there is a guy in Cedar Rapids, around 75 miles from here who should be famous, is famous in Europe, by the name of Craig Erickson. Every region has some fabulous musicians just waiting for a break. So let's hear it for all the "weekend warriors" who need nothing more than a break to hit the "big time".
Please note, when I say big time, I may not mean top 40 radio play, or number one Country, or whatever passes for pop music these days.

1. The Chesterfield Kings
http://www.thechesterfieldkings.com/

They've been around for decades; rock muckety-mucks worship them; yet they're still flying under the radar. I hear they played one of the late-night shows lately though--Letterman or somebody. I missed it.

2. Jim Boggia (Philadelphia area)
Jim Boggia is one of the most brilliant singer/songwriter/musicians I've ever heard. He's got quite a large "coffee house" following in Philly, but he's worked with Aimee Mann, Jill Sobule and that Constantine guy from American Idol.

Do check him out:

5. Here in Denver we used to have a band called "Dear Marsha"
they were a lot of fun. They used to cover songs from the Violent Femmes. They toured the neighboring states and we went down to Texas to see them perform there. They broke up some years back, sometimes they get back together for Pridefest but for the most part they don't exist anymore.

10. Went to Toronto several years ago for a Union convention
and saw some prog rock band whose name I can't remember at this time. But they weren't all bad. And that is among the cleanest cities I have ever been to. Thank you for the links. I'm sort of interested in regional bands, as I feel that's where the music is.

13. King Johnson
King Johnson: Hot Fish Laundry Mat -- by George Graham

(Landslide Records 1028 As broadcast on WVIA-FM 4/9/2003)

New Orleans is known as the birthplace of jazz, but its multi-cultural tradition has resulted in a unique polyglot music scene, bringing together everything from jazz to rhythm & blues to boogie-woogie and stride piano to brass-band music to the Cajun and Zydeco styles, with undercurrents of Latin American and even some classical. It's not surprising that musicians all over the country and world have found themselves influenced by the New Orleans music scene. This week, we have an excellent example. It's the latest recording by the Atlanta sextet known as King Johnson. They call their CD Hot Fish Laundry Mat.

King Johnson started out in 1995 as a blues trio, with guitarist and vocalist Oliver Wood, brother of Chris Wood of Medesky, Martin & Wood fame, bassist Chris Long, and drummer Greg Baba. The name they chose for the group was intended to pay tribute to all the bluesmen named King and Johnson -- such as B.B., Freddie and Albert King; Robert, Luther, and Blind Willie Johnson. Over the course of eight years and three previous albums, the group gradually added horns and a percussionist with diverse backgrounds who brought their various musical influences into the mix. With near-constant performing and touring, and a natural predilection toward jamming, they have evolved into an eclectic but danceable mix which draws on a panoply of New Orleans ingredients, from the brass band sound, including tuba, to Zydeco rub-board percussion, to the distinctive Crescent City rhythmic groove, with its underlying "Latin tinge," as it has been called. They even dabble with some hillbilly country influence. Their added horn players, trombonist and sousaphonist Adam Mewherter, and saxophonist Marcus James bring interesting backgrounds, with Mewherter having been a part of James Brown's band, along with playing in horn sections for Don Henley and Al Jarreau among others. Saxophonist James spent a while playing in a circus band, and also performed with the late Steve Allen. Rounding out the group is percussionist Chris Uhler, whose contributions further broaden the group's sound.

Also check out their MySpace to hear some of their music. I know Ollie, Chris & Greg and was supporting them when they were still playing at Roosters, a wings & beer joint in Douglasville Ga, and selling their first CD, Cats n Dogs, out of the trunks of their cars.

Take a listen---

Brave Combo are a polka/rock band based in Denton, Texas. Founded in 1979 by guitarist/keyboardist/accordionist Carl Finch, they have been a prominent fixture in the Texas music scene for more than twenty-five years. Their music, both originals and covers, incorporates a number of dance styles, mostly polka, but also rumba, cha-cha-cha, choro, samba, two-step, cumbia, charanga, merengue, etc.

As part of their perceived artistic mission to expand the musical tastes of their listeners, they have often played and recorded covers of well-known songs in a style radically different from the original versions. Examples include polka versions of Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" and The Doors' "People are Strange", The Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" as a cha-cha, and Sixteen Tons as a cumbia. While their records may have a sense of humor, they are played straight and not usually considered joke or novelty records.

They won a Grammy Award in 1999 in the Best Polka Album category for their album Polkasonic, and again in 2005 for their album Let's Kiss.

23. The NM Voodoo Chili?
if so, I'm proud to have been the first in a long line of musicians fired from that band. If not the NM band, then in the immortal words of Emily Littella; never mind.

29. Yeah, I certainly understand about the day jobs and families
most of the guys I play with including myself are in the same boat... Voodoo Chili here in NM is a blues band; always been good musicians in it, but the running joke around here is that you're not really a member of the blues scene if you haven't been fired from Voodoo Chili...

16. Are the King B's still playing around Austin, Tx.?
There's a whole group of TX based bands that never leave the southwest.

I really dug the Bs when I lived in Texas.

Here in So Cal, everyone comes to make the big time, so they live here but might be from elsewhere.

BB Chung King and the Buddaheads kick major ass.
