The Red Sox Juggernaut Rolls On in Game Two
The massively favored red Sox team, clocking in at $143 million in payroll, continued its seemingly inevitable run against the hapless Rockies tonight, in a closer game, but with the expected results.

The Green Monster is alive and well in Fenway, but it's no longer a Wall. It's now literally green, to the tune of $143 million.

Sweep? It won't6 be a surprise when it comes, given the vast disparity between these teams.

Any team can win in baseball, no matter how much the bank roll is.

The yankees bankroll is about twice the red sox.

That is part of the fun about baseball, you never know and anyone can win really.

I guess the point is that the yanks have the highest bank roll and they aren't in the fuckin world series, the god damn colorado rockies beat them.

So your argument holds no water, get it.

Now don't make me lose my temper over my beloved red sox, I am happy right now, where you are just a whining, sniveling, sore sport.

Listen, I don't give a fuck about payroll. I really don't. I actually agree with your position. Now if we could only get some Sox fans to agree to that argument across the board, we'd be in business! Thanks for going on record, though. You're absolutely right. Anyone can win at any time. Payroll means nothing. I hope you'll apply that consistently in the future!

but still, the yanks were beaten by some team, I can't remember at this time, obviously and I am sure they had a lower bank roll than the yankees.

So the argument still holds some merit, although I would agree, not nearly as much as it could have.

I just want to make sure that you're consistent. The payroll doesn't matter now when it's Boston, so it also never mattered when it was the Yankees, and won't matter next year or the year after. We can never expect you to complain about the Yankee payroll again, right, since payroll means nothing? That's correct, yes?

52. So payroll DOES matter
Huh?

Didn't your last post imply that payroll doesn't matter? I'm confused. Or is it that you want to reserve the right to gripe about the Yankee payroll, but want to exclude the same criticism when it comes to Boston? Or is it something in between, payroll matters, but it's not everything?

For the record, I guess I understand why Boston fans cathect on to anything they perceive as criticism as if it's coming from Yankee fans, but I'm on record all over this board (including in this very thread!) as NOT a Yankee fan. It's far worse than that! I'm a Met fan! Ouuuuuch. We had the third largest payroll (after the massive Yankee and Red Sox payrolls), and we collapsed in the most disastrous late season blow up in the history of baseball! Yeah, I own that legacy. :-)

But really, your position seems contradictory.

There was going to be a team in the MLB that had the best record. If it had been the Rockies, I'm sure you'd be proud of that. You wouldn't be whining about how "predictable" the series is.

Edited on Fri Oct-26-07 08:47 AM by alcibiades_mystery
Not me! Find where I said that.

I'm not whining at all. I'm stating a series of facts.

The Red Sox are not scrappy underdogs. They are the overwhelming favorites, a baseball giant with a huge payroll and the best players in the league, really. Good on 'em. Why would you interpret any of this as "they should feel bad about it?" Unless you already have some belief that we should only feel good about scrappy underdogs, it doesn't matter a whit whether your team is massively favored and sports all the advantages. Since I see no inherent value in being the "scrappy underdog," I really don't give a shit.

Your response suggests that maybe it's YOU who feels uncomfortable about supporting the massive favorite. I don't feel uncomfortable about it all. Again, I ask you to find something that warrants your interpretation.

What's the difference?

There are two points:

1) You're not the underdog.
2) You should never complain about payroll disparity again.

Has nothing to do with feeling bad. besides, my 15 or 20 posts are nothing compared to the 150-200 "Go Sox" posts by some others. I'm doing the same thing, with a different twist.

Has nothing to do with feeling bad.

39. Hey man, I AM a Mets fan
And I'm not complaining about a goddamn thing. We had the 3rd highest payroll in baseball, and didn't even make the playoffs! Collapsed in the most disgraceful late season disaster in baseball history! Hoo-aaah!

As I said upthread, I don't give a shit about the payroll argument. I think it's bullshit. But would you deny that5 it has been the bread and butter argument of the Red Sox Nation lo these many years? Would you deny that Red Sox fans have been whining about the massive Yankee payroll for years and years and years, that you can barely have the Yankees win an early season game without some Red SDox fan griping about bought chaqmpionships and the like? Don't deny it, cuz you know it's true. So what's good for the goose is good for the Bosox.

You got a great team there. But if the payroll argument isn't relevant NOW, then it was never relevant, and shouldn't be relevant in the future. I only hope all the Red Sox Nation embraces this principle, now that they're the ones benefiting from massive payroll disparity. No more griping about payroll, Nation! It makes you look ridiculous.
