Perhaps I'm missing the point, but when I post and the thread comes to a screeching halt...
what does that mean?

1. It means you've been raptured, and all you can see in Heaven is DU as it was when you were lifted up

2. I've been raptured?! So the Fundies were wrong!!
I suppose gloating about it would undo it, though, huh?

under the weight of your own self absorption.

No insult intended, just reflection on my own experience...

9. Nope, you did nothing wrong
It's just my experience that, my threads collapse whenever I get too focused on how I feel,

rather than on how other people feel.

You see, we are all really self-absorbed, and we love for people to ask us our opinions about ourselves.

So, if I want a lot of replies on a thread, I ask people to talk about themselves and give me their opinions on subject X.

If I want a thread to die, I state my opinion and ask people to comment on what I think.

See? It's easy...

8. That happens to me sometimes...
especially if I try to divide by zero.

12. Divide by zero is really bad
unless you're in theory of computation, in which case the answer is zero.

by definition.

14. Oh, I don't think so.
Dividing by zero is ALWAYS bad. In ANY theory.

Bad muju!

16. Hate to burst your bubble,
but computer scientists just define division by zero as zero,

because it tidies up their proofs.

Trust me, I'm speaking from experience...

19. What? That makes no sense!
How could that tidy up anything? I have to see an example of this. This kind of weirditude could keep me up at nights!

21. This has to do with primitive recursive functions
which, by definition have to be total, which means they have to return a natural number for all possible inputs.

In order to use the divide function as a primitive recursive, it must be defined at zero (zero is a natural number).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primitive_recursive_function

Computability deals with natural numbers.

22. Oooh, that's disturbing...
on several levels.

I like Steven Wright's take on it:

Black holes are where God divided by zero.

I thought that it was just me that killed threads with a single post. Misery does so love company.

Think of it as having the last word.
