You SF area Californians are living the good life.
I'm a hardcore Floridian and I love living here, but I just left the bay area after a weekend of fun and all I can say is WOW!

Classic yachts sailing the bay on Sunday, Napa valley with wine tastings and lunch on a vineyard lawn, driving the hills, I have to admit...it's a pretty nice life (outside of traffic) you've got here.

2. The city was nice.
The bay was fantastic and the surrounding area was unbelievable. The weather was perfect this weekend and we rented this little two seater convertable...heaven!

3. Fog, earthquakes, housing costs, crime, water wars.
Aint no such place as heaven. Well...except for the Maui upcountry.

Still, the Bay Area isn't a bad place to live. I'd probably move there if it were still possible to own a few acres without shelling out millions of dollars, so I'll settle for living an hour away.

5. Earthquakes vs. hurricanes.
I agree that the cost of living (and buying propery) is way out of line, but, wow, what a place.

8. Touche
At least you can see hurricanes coming though. I was climbing a fucking TREE when Loma Prieta hit in 1989. I can't put into words how badly that sucked.

10. Yes, but the stress of an approaching hurricane is intense.
I'd almost prefer no warning and have it all over with quickly. Hurricanes are like watching a wreck happen in slow motion, that and they go on for a long time. I sat in my house during hurricane Ivan, surrounded by water, wind howling like a banshee, trees falling...hour after hour...the stress is hard to deal with.

6. Third visit, but this time was the most impressive.
I could see myself living here and enjoying it. Add in the mountains, wine country, and sailing...well, I'm impressed.

9. Ah, the traffic
but after spending a few days in NYC with my son, even Bay Area traffic doesn't seem so bad.

Theough Kudos to NYC. Your public transporation rocks! Got unlimited Metro passes for $24 for the week. We go everywhere. They don't have anything like this in the Bay Area!

12. I grew up there and sometimes I really miss S.F., Napa and especially Berkeley
It can be intensely beautiful and wonderful.

I think Portland is a better match for me and my family at this point, though.

13. It's better when you're visiting!
I moved here about 10 years ago and I do love it here - the weather, the people, the free WiFi - but daily life doesn't include yachts and wine tastings. More like SUVs and wine guzzling.

Glad you enjoyed your visit to what I consider where I should have been from!
