8. Birds used to drive me nuts in early spring.
I lived for awhile in mid-coast Maine. Next to the house where I lived there was a stand of evergreens (pine, hemlock etc...). It provided good cover from snow and wind and the local wild turkeys made a habit of roosting there when the weather turned foul. A few them probably roosted there every night during the winter.
Come spring, when Mr. Turkey was reeeeaaallly eager to meet Ms. Turkey they would start their mating calls at some ungodly hour in the morning. You could set a clock by it. In addition they can also be really loud and the sound isn't that pleasant. Kind of like a hoarse squeak.

They woke my older brother up a number of days when he was visiting on vacation. Nearly drove him insane.

10. I have a friend who was bombing down the road in OK
and he hit a turkey flying across the road.

It went through his windshield.

He was okay, but that would have scared the crap out of me! :o

6. They've been here in Portland in numbers for a while now.
And who is scared of turkeys? They big, but really, you vs turkey? You'd win hands down.
I'm surprised some people aren't scared of squirrels.

15. Those wild turkeys are real savvy here in California
I encounter those birds eleven months out of the year, but I have yet to spy one in the month a November. They are becoming kinda pesky in the Northern California vineyards, porking out on grapes. Coincidently, California's hunting season for the birds is only open for the month of November. I believe they vacation in Cabo San Lucas for the entire month, kicking back with margaritas.

a lot of states around here, i'm pretty sure the season for turkey is april! that's when i'm always advised to be extra careful whilst bird watching in turkey areas, lest i get my fool head blown off :-)
