Why wasn't Jerry Lewis a member of the Rat Pack?

(Joey Bishop passed away today; hence the topic).

Why wasn't Jerry Lewis considered a member of the Rat Pack? There was Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, and Joey Bishop. But wasn't Jerry Lewis part of that gang, too?

He always played the part of the fool, and I don't think beyond the act he and dean really got along.
