Me? It's First Blood. It's simple, doesn't screw around, the 'hero' doesn't kill anyone until really pushed at the end. I think it's part of the reason I signed up for the military.

Terminator 2 is a close second, followed by Aliens. John Cameron is an expert story teller.

2. Watching it now
The part where he runs back to the mine is a bit implausible, a Green Beret wouldn't allow himself to be trapped like that. But of course, it's Rambo, so he finds a way out!

Very implausible in points, silly in places, also surprisingly bloodthirsty for a family film (high body count) but fun from start to finish and lots of action.

I've seen featuring the steriod crazed governor of California, Governor Hydrogen Hummer.

But to be honest, I haven't seen all that much by the steroid crazed Governor.

I'll stick with the Groundhog. It was far more realistic.

29. "Debbie Does Dallas: The Next Generation"
Lexus Locklear gets a LOT of action in that one, and she's pretty damn hot.

Oh, wait...different genre, it appears.

My top three would be

"The Killer" (John Woo, naturally)
"The Punisher" (Tom Jane as Frank Castle version)
Another vote for "First Blood" as it is quite good.

34. not fair
I could have said "All three Rambo" movies. While Bourne movies and First Blood have the 1 death count in common, First Blood started it all. And while starting it all doesn't make it any better, First Blood tells the story of Rambo more than Ultimatum wraps up the story of Bourne.

Hmmm, Bourne. That really is an excellent contender.

37. The first Bourne movie, to be sure
I'd nearly thrown in the towel on action films until I saw the first one. Plus, the added bonus of espionage genre vs, say, sci-fi or war which invariably makes things "bigger", i.e. explosions, special effects, etc.

Loved the way cars did not blow up or go shooting up ramps in that first one. The visceral, Jackie Chan vibe from the snowy fire exit scene where unbroken camera pans show Bourne dropping down levels, etc.

Great pacing too.

67. I've given this a great deal of thought and am ready to make my pronouncment.
I, Leeroysphits, being of sound mind do here and now declare that the movie "The Road Warrior" sequel to the movie "Mad Max" is hands down the undisputed BEST action movie of the last thirty years.

Some of you chose films like "The Matrix" or "Aliens" others asserted that films such as "First Blood" or various soft core porn movies should claim the title. What PUNY opinions!
Just WALK AWAY from these ridiculous views and I spare you lives.

Just walk away.

76. Terminator 2, definitely - and one of few action movies to win 4 Oscars
and be nominated for 6.

Cameron really pushed for Linda Hamilton to be nominated for an Oscar, but that didn't happen.

Brilliant, wonderful movie - first, the plot and story line works. Second, it's balls to the wall filled with action, and damned good action, too.

The first Rambo movie was also fantastic. The last Casino Royale was great, as was The World is Not Enough.

78. The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
There are plenty of movies that are more action-y, but Peter Jackson's surprise conversion of Tolkien's literary exercise into action-adventure has heart.

98. Raiders of the Lost Ark--there are no challengers
It begins with the temple raid and ends with the friggin' wrath of God.

2nd prize goes to The Road Warrior, while Aliens gets 3rd.

99. My favorite movie EVER--Tombstone (or Last Man Standing)
Edited on Sun Oct-07-07 10:35 PM by Godhumor
Tombstone still remains the pinnacle of all cinema past and present as far as I am concerned (Hyperbole, much?).

Besides, how often do you get to watch a guy get shot in the head from 5 feet away, stumble forward while the nerves shut down, and get taunted all the way by the person who shot him.

God, I love that movie.

That said, despite the Bruce Willis factor, Last Man Standing was an excellent remake of Yojimbo, and the balletic violence was phenomenal.

107. All very good ones mentioned so far, but I have to add
Desperado. Not a great story, but good action sequences. And it has one of the most true to life scenes in movies when Salma Hayek stops traffic.

I also like The Fifth Element. Vintage Bruce Willis plus Gary Oldman and very tongue in cheek throughout.
