8. Good Timing. I'm Off To Bed Now And Happened To Hit Refresh Really Quick.

It's been a long day, and a long night. I've been on the phone with nurses all night who literally called me from their HOMES to tell me how touched they've been by Stacey and how broken up they are about everything. They told me the whole ICU floor has been shedding tears for her and praying for her, and that they've never had a patient in there that touched them so much. I think the videos of her I brought it kinda really impacted them. They said that, and how they can just see how wonderful she is through my love and devotion for her.

They literally called me at home. They were asking me things like how we met, and all about her, and one nurse said she really loves us, and will be there for us if she passes. She wants to watch the kids sometimes and help out. This is how touched they've been by my wife. They are all broken up and in tears, and with me on the phone crying with me hoping with all hope that there's some way a miracle of miracle may come.

But today was a bad day. Her O2 saturation is between 79-82. That isn't good. She's dying. Slowly, but she's dying. I ache like I've never ached before. I hold onto hope for the miracle of miracles but clinically speaking we all know what is imminently going to occur. We're about at the end of the road here, and it is tearing me apart inside like my words could never describe.

When they had to bluntly ask me if she goes into cardiac arrest later, if I want them to jump on her chest and try and bring her back, though it may break her ribs and make her bleed, I almost lost it. I couldn't believe someone was asking me a question like that about my wife. But I told them yes, I wanted them to, because I want to be able to look all of her family members in the eyes and say I allowed them to do everything they could till the final effort and final second. But that was earlier tonight. About an hour ago, I called the nurse back and rescinded it. I didn't know it could break her ribs and cause her to bleed a lot, due to her condition. I don't want that. I don't want any more damage to her. She's been through enough. If her heart gives out, it's because it simply did all it could. Resuscitating her would buy her almost nothing, since it's not like the virus would magically heal in the half hour it might buy her. So for now, I rescinded it. I want her to go peacefully. Not possibly terrified with people thumping on her Who knows what one experiences, ya know? But I will reconsider my order in the morning. I will talk with her father and sister and let them know the issues, and why I decided the way I did. I'll see if they agree or not and reassess it then.

For now I'm beyond exhausted. It's been a tremendously long and emotional night. I didn't expect a nurse to call from home all emotional and keep me on the phone for over an hour. I didn't expect the nurse actually watching her right now, to also spill her emotions to me for an hour. But I don't mind. I take comfort in knowing that if my Stacey is to leave us, she left this world STILL touching the hearts and souls of everyone around her. And I do take comfort in that.

So sorry for the babble, my brain's a bit loopy. But I think we're at the end here. A miracle of miracles could still occur, I guess, but realistically speaking she's dying right now. She may make it through the night, she might not. Either way, it's too far gone for her to recover I think. It's just too far gone. I can't even begin to express to you right now all the pain, sorrow, love, loss, fear and unknown associated with that. Wouldn't even know where to begin.

But for now I'm off to bed. I still have hope in the face of none. I'm still praying for that miracle, and for her to be this miracle woman that the doctors talk about for years to come. I'm gonna go back to praying now, and God bless you all.

Ive been on the crash team many times. Know that the nurses tell you truth: they know her case and her course. Deciding to spare her that final shock and indignity is not harsh, but merciful. These are hard-- but loving truths you face, courageously and compassionately. Face them together, be magnificent. Just hold her and comfort her.


The road is open to her now. She knows where to go. She needs to know you will be with her the whole way.

37. That is a very hard decision to have to make.

When my mother was dying I had to persuade my dad to let her go, even though three of my five siblings had not managed to make it to say goodbye, as they lived too far away. She was unconscious, even after they used the paddles on her. They had jump started her heart a couple of times, but she was not going to live, and it is a painful procedure. Poor Daddy. It really broke his heart, but he finally said to let her go the next time her heart stopped. Afterward, he felt happier that he had chosen what was best for her, not for himself.

My heart breaks for you OMC, but I believe in your love for her you have made the right choice--the choice that is best for her, even though it tears you to pieces.
