Do you lock your car doors when you get in?
Edited on Sun Sep-30-07 10:24 AM by Shell Beau
I put on my seatbelt and lock the doors as soon as I get in. I don't even know I am doing it. Just routine, I guess.

I don't want any loonies jumping in my car with me!

3. No I don't.
The only loony I expect to find in my car is me. I don't fear other people jumping in with me. Though my car has a neat feature anyway: when I press the button once on the key fob, it only unlocks the driver's door. If I want the other doors unlocked too, I must press the button two times.

7. I've noticed Americans are very much more crime conscious
I don't worry about having my car doors unlocked, because people generally don't try to do crazy stuff like get in with me. Just my experience over here.

If I had my bag or something on the passenger seat then I would keep the door locked. An opportunistic thief would not hesitate to open the door and swipe it.

9. The liklihood of someone jumping in is slim, but it happens.
You never know! I travel a lot and like to be as safe as I can be. I also keep water in my car just in case. I used to have an emergency kit but I have no idea what happened to it!

12. I forget to do that when driving other cars
Our car is old but it has automatic locks that still work. Once the vehicle reaches something like 10mph, they automatically lock if we've forgotten to flip the switch. It's spoiled me.

Can't blame you for not wanting a loonie in the car.

13. Yeah, I hope when I get a new car, it has the automatic locks!
I can see how that would spoil you!

I just don't want to be an easy target!

14. Yes, basic safety
Not that I'm worried about maniacs jumping into my car (c'mon!) but you don't want the car door to open during a crash.

That and you don't want a passenger (dog, kid, etc) accidentally opening the door while the car is moving.

39. Some cars with autolocks automatically unlock if the car is involved in an accident.
There was a spate of crimes in the UK about ten years ago, where thieves would ram a Merc (the only cars that had this feature at the time) and then rob the driver of the now unlocked car. So even features added to enhance safety can sometimes have the opposite effect.

There is a mechanism to get out of the car in case of emergency, which is nice to know.

19. Hey - I don't lock the doors when I get out!
Of course, I live in a town where people leave their cars running while they run into the milk store. Admittedly, that happens in winter with cars that are so old it's a toss-up whether they would restart!

My cars are all over 25 years old, so I don't worry about them getting stolen. I don't even worry about driving through "bad" neighborhoods. Why would anyone want to steal my car?

21. I don't mind stealing the car!! Take it if you want it! I need a new one anyway!
:P

Cars are stolen lots round these parts. I know at least 7 people who have had their car stolen. Another woman left her car unlocked while pumping gas, and a guy stole her purse off her passenger seat. She never even saw him. The cameras showed him running off. She never knew until she went to pay and the purse was gone!! There are some brazen people out there.

28. I did when I lived in Grand Rapids, MI. A friend was carjacked there. Closed head injury.
Two thugs hit her with something, dragged her out. She never fully recovered.

Now, I live in a much nicer place.

30. not usually
my 'central' locking is busted and i can do it so that only the driver's side door unlocks, so i don't have to worry about the rest of the doors being unlocked. the only time i lock my door while i'm driving is if i'm in certain parts of denver after dark and that doesn't happen very often

31. Generally not
I don't expect anyone to be able to open the car door while I am driving. There have been no carjackings at traffic lights or stop signs around here. The occaisional mugging or sexual assault typically takes place before one would be in a position to be locked in a car.
I am more concerned that I would get in an accident and be unable to get out of the car if I locked myself in.

38. The only door that is unlocked when I get in is the driver's door...
unless someone is with me. Depending upon where I am, the door will lock automatically at 15 miles per hour. If I'm feeling nervous, it is locked immediately.
