HEROES SPOILERS
So, everyone who died is still alive?

WTF?

That's the cheapest gimmick since the "it was all a dream" sequence in Dallas!

I re-watched the season finale last week and was struck once again by the power of the selfless deaths of Nathan and Peter.

In short, all of the sacrifices made in last season's finale were wiped away.

That's what's known in fiction as "bullshit."

Sure, it's done all the times in comic books, but it's bullshit there, too.

I hadn't planned to watch this season anyway, and now I'm sure that I made the right choice.

1. I don't remember them dying
They flew up into the air. Presumably Nathan got out of there before the blast, and Peter can heal, remember?

10. That's bogus!
Edited on Tue Sep-25-07 02:07 PM by Orrex
If Peter's (and Claire's) healing ability can be interrupted (or greatly slowed down) by a stick or shard of glass in the brain, surely being at ground zero for a nuclear explosion would be at least as capable of overwhelming that power.

And, sure, Nathan could have dropped Peter at the last minute, but doing so would serve only two purposes, dramatically speaking:

1. To cheat the viewer into thinking that a sacrifice had been made
2. To strip the season finale of any emotional impact

If events transpired as you describe (and as I now fear that they did), then I declare mission accomplished on both counts!

Bogus, I say!

12. Hahaha!
Remember, Claire survived when Ted exploded, so why not Peter now?

Obviously they were not gonna kill of two of the most popular and hottest stars. But I could be wrong, wait and see what the season brings. Last one was full of surprises, right? Why not expect good things this time too?

22. Ted didn't explode!
So Claire survived an event of much less power than what Peter underwent.

The surprises in season one didn't involve retroactively stripping the dramatic value of events that had already passed; this "surprise" does exactly that!

Bogus!

14. Claire was at the house in Odessa, when Nuclear boy went... well nuclear.
and she kept regenerating. So why can't Peter? That also showed in that episode that the nuclear guy's power throws itself off, like Sue Storm can generate force fields and throw them out. So he could go BOOM and not be injured.

18. Nuclear Boy in Odessa didn't go critical
And anyway, the point remains that the finale was set up as though Nathan and Peter were making a sacrifice (in the manner of heroes), but now we're seeing that they merely set themselves up for a lot of post hoc wiggle room.

Cheap ploy and a disservice to anyone who read the finale as it was portrayed.

Heck, for all we know, future Hiro could have zipped into the present, grabbed them both at the moment of the explosion, then zipped them to a safe location before returning to the future.

Heck, that would be no less internally consistent than the explanation being foisted on the viewership already!

Bogus!

25. Bogus!
What's bogus isn't your explanation; what's bogus is that your explanation is very probably correct.

I believe that you've correctly interpreted the writers' trickery and their use of a cheap ploy to generate sympathy and interest in the characters.

To that I say...

Well, you know...

26. Well the Nuclear, going critical part...
the way I view it is not that the whole body explodes. It just generates out of the body. And the destructive force moves outward from the person. Leaving that person intact. Like Ted was doing in Odessa, when he burned down the Bennett's house. So when we see the BOOM, Peter had met the critical mass part, and the energy is released, which knocks him unconsious, and makes him not remember. Nathan upon reaching the heighth they did, either dropped Peter and beat a hasty retreat, or Peter remember he could fly. I will wait to see how they show in the next few episodes. The writer is saying the 4th episode will explain what happened. Have to wait and see.

29. So he's like a big, atomic flashbulb?
I guess that makes sense from a comic-book-physics standpoint, but...

I still maintain that the finale's climax would have been more powerful if the brothers had actually sacrificed something instead of escaping off-screen at the last possible moment.

30. Well, it would have been powerful.
But the brother's family started this whole mess. The way the story seemed to play out, was that their mother and father were involved in the "company" and Dad got a conscience and started fighting the company, and they killed him. Their mother is still involved and trying to stop the "heroes". The best way that they could do that was for Peter to destroy the city and Nathan to become president to fight the terrorists. But Nathan got a conscience and saved New York and Peter from becoming a scapegoat for the government to go after people. So it stands to reason that the brothers should be still alive to fight Evil Mom and the company. Nathan did call his mother evil in last night's episode.

15. oh! Great question!
I knew Sylar was still alive, but had not really considered him impersonating someone last night!

I still think it's Peter - maybe the blast wiped his mind? Which would be a convenient way for the writers to have him slightly less powerful, in that he won't remember all of his gained abilities.

8. Boring??
Parkman adopted a kid and got divorced, Hiro's dad's gonna die, Nathan's the president and an alcoholic, Claire's dad and Mohinder are gonna take the Company down, Hiro's in 1600s Japan with his hero, and there's a new Honduran hero whose power we don't know about yet, but she's in trouble!

Oh, and we still haven't met the "hero" in Molly's dreams, so there's a whole new villian coming up.

16. Well, he bumped into Ando on the street. When Ando was bringing the paper to Hiro's Dad.
So if he is on the street, like that, he is not in office. Plus he was not running for President, he was running for House of Representatives. The future paintings showed him as President, if the time line had continued and the bomb had destroyed New York. But he stopped that and I assume was not elected.

it ends like this: we notice that sylar's body is gone after he has been "killed" leaving only a bloody trail leading from where he laid to an open manhole cover and a cockroach crawls into the manhole.

remember this is not the first time we've seen sylar almost dead(we never actually saw him dead - ever).

http://youtube.com/watch?v=XFqQ3Q6mdvQ

so that leaves out sylar being dead.

as for peter and his brother it was the final quote of mohinder that made me believe they were not dead.
