In the last eighteen months, my department (Lumber and Building Materials) has gone through four supervisors:
The first one was the best department supervisor in the whole store. They moved him to the worst department in the store. He has squared it away. When he left, he told the assistant store manager to make me department head...but instead we got...
The second one was a man from Electrical who wanted a department head slot--specifically, he wanted the Electrical Department. The first thing this guy told me was "I don't want this job." The poor guy found out Lumber is WAY different from Electrical; he quit and is driving a Coca-Cola truck. About a week before the official announcement was made, rumors started to fly that he would receive the slot. When he left, he told the ASM to make me department head...but instead we got...
The third one was the Night Crew department head. He needed a merchandising department to fulfill his dream of becoming an assistant store manager. He got his ASM slot, moved to another store, squared it away, and within three months one of his customers offered him $75,000/year to run five construction crews. About a week before the official announcement was made, rumors started to fly that he would receive the slot. When he left, he told the ASM to make me department head...but instead we got...
The fourth one was a man from Flooring who needed a different job because his department head was going to kill him. He got a job as a schoolteacher (turns out he's got a license) and went part time. About a week before the official announcement was made, rumors started to fly that he would receive the slot. Before he stepped down, he told the ASM to make me department head.

Today I started hearing rumors that I got the slot.
