while we brought our digital camera, my wife forgot the USB cable to download pics to her laptop, which I'm using right now

4. yes, very hot
low 90s and humid. At night, it only gets down to 78-80 and still fairly humid. So, probably like a Washington DC or Atlanta.

15. This is a whole extra level of brutal humidity, though
I've been through plenty of hot & humid days in Connecticut in the past, but this is like stepping out into a sauna I had a shirt that was almost completely soaked through after a very short walk to Starbucks.

6. Is this the region where your wife's family lives?
If so, ask her to name some signature food dishes of the area please. I love Chinese regional cooking.

Hope you have a great visit.

7. My wife has some relatives here -
we're waiting for a bunch of her cousins - all single young women in their early to mid 20s - to pick us up at the hotel here.

But, her family is from Nanjing, about a 4 hour train ride from here - Nanjing is the former capitol of the short-lived Chinese Republic that existed from the fall of the last emperor to the invasion of Japan in the 1930s (made famous in the book "The Rape of Nanking")

Nanjing is famous for their Nanjing salty duck, which is a different version of Peking duck. Probably some other dishes as well.

10. I was there 25 years ago next month....
Stayed at the old Peace Hotel on the Bund. Interesting place with lots of history. In Beijing, we stayed at some brand-new hotel that reputedly had been built based on plans of a new (and swank for the chain) Holiday Inn somewhere in North Carolina.

Enjoy your visit, though I know that you have visited before. I did. Flying was easier than trying to dig my way there from a Chicago backyard as I tried as a kid. Given my ancestry, digging to Ireland probably would have been easier.

12. mY wife stayed at the Peace Hotel on business a few years back
And, presidents traditionally stay there when visiting China... I know Clinton did.

But, my wife did not like it. Of course, she didn't get the special presidential suite, either.

A lot of Chinese hotels have really grand lobbies worthy of a hotel on the Vegas strip, but rooms more akin to a small city/big town.
