Poll question: Who should be the new Willie Wonka?
Edited on Tue Jul-08-03 03:19 PM by khephra
snip

According to one of our scoopers, Christopher Walken (CATCH ME IF YOU CAN) is one of the leaders emerging from the acting talent pool. It wouldn't be the first time Walken's worked with Burton; the actor played the part of scheming industrialist Max Schreck in BATMAN RETURNS.

But here's where it gets stranger: yesterday Dark Horizons ran a rumor that Walken's adversary in BATMAN RETURNS, namely Michael Keaton himself, is also being considered for the role of the candy tycoon.

(I've added the other two big names that's been attached to the role in the past to the poll.)

1. Walken is a talented singer and dancer
But the book on which the movie is based was set in England. It should really be a British film.

2. Voted Walken, but dreaming Short.
Martin Short would make a great Willy Wonka. He even sings well.

3. Gary Oldman
He can do batty and slightly threatening and we already know he has a make-up fetish. I'd love to seem him do something decent instead of "Jesus Christ 2:The Revenge of Pilate" which seems to be all he's being offered these days.

5. Because he's an overactor
But he is British, and he did occur to me for that reason.

12. Willy Wonka is an over-the-top character
Gene Wilder chewed through every scene he was in and the new WW should too.

All is explained. I voted Walken, but Oldman is good too (he understated).

I can't see Keaton doing the happy song and dance thing. He's too sardonic. Nic Cage is a good actor, but he scares little kids. Ditto Michael "dangle that baby" Jackson.

16. Why does anyone feel the need to remake this movie?
I love the original, I saw it when I was a kid and I watched it (uncut) on cable just a week or so ago. Gene Wilder is great, so are all the unknowns cast as the children.
I can't picture Christopher Walken as Willy Wonka. I think he's a great actor, but just not for that type of role. I'm surprised, as Tim Burton is making the film, that Johnny Depp isn't in the running for the part.

18. This movie shouldn't even be made
none of the choices could even approach the brilliance that Gene Wilder brought to the role. Someone, anyone, find Tim Burton and kick him in the shins for me. The guy hasn't made a good movie since... well, ever actually...

Incestuous Hollywood, may your offspring bleed at a feather's tough.

25. With all due respect
:puke:

His sentimental streak puts him out of the running for me. I'd rather see his buddy Bill Irwin (the original Mr. Noodle from Sesame Street) in the role, and he doesn't have nearly the same energy as any of the other guys.

23. Willy Wonka isn't being remade...
Edited on Tue Jul-08-03 03:08 PM by RememberJohn
The movie is actually being called "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and will be a much more faithful rendition of the book.

The Gene Wilder movie changed the name and watered the story down. The book ""Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was much darker than the movie "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" which was a kids movie.

It's going to be the "Return to Oz" for Charlie book fans.

(A lot of Oz book fans feel that the musical Oz really isn't that accurate of a film version of the world of the books, but that the sequel "Return to Oz" matches the darkness of the original works.)

That movie leaves no doubt that somebody involved with it was a big-time tripper.

which I think, coupled with Burton's pandemic dark spin on everything, would be really trippy.
