I just watched The (original) Omen AND The Exorcist.
Freaky Friday indeed.

I don't believe I wish to go to bed just yet....

2. I never could watch the original Exorcist.
I've still never seen it. The RADIO commercials scared me so much as a boy
that I've never watched it. :scared:

3. Even after all these years it stands alone.
It's VERY harsh.

4. The whole hype around it scared me so much when it first came out, I still have never seen it.
I've seen most of the famous "money shots" in clips on the Internet, but I've never seen it all the way through - and probably never will. Even just thinking about it now creeps me out, and I haven't seen the movie.

7. "Horror" movie makers of today should take cues from these two -
All modern horror movies are merely startlefests and gorewashes. Any idiot can do that.

A true artist in the genre is the one that makes a movie that STILL creeps you out decades after its inception.

The Omen and The Exorcist do exactly that.

9. religion class
I remember our teacher reading us the account that THE EXORCIST is based on during religion class when I was going to Catholic school. This was back in the late 1960's.

5. Those are two of my all-time favorite horror movies!

They just bring out the mother in me.

On a more serious note, I find it very interesting that a rash of movies like this all came out around the same time about religion, demonic take-overs, and children. Kind of like Rosemary's Baby. Questioning faith and purity in the wake of the Vietnam War seemed to be the flavor of that decade.

10. When I was younger, The Exorcist scared me deeply
But now, it actually seems kind of silly. Maybe it's because I no longer buy the religious message in it. Or maybe I'm just older. Either way, the idea of demonic possession doesn't scare me anymore. It's a well made film, no doubt, but it has lost most of the punch that it once had.

11. What's the big deal?
I've seen The Exorcist more than a half dozen times -- it's been shown on TV a bunch -- and have always enjoyed it immensely. I even paid to see the 'director's cut' (or whatever version that was) when it was rereleased in theaters a few years ago. I didn't think it was quite as good as the earlier version -- all the added footage to the introductory Iraq scene just made it kind of tedious, and the scene with Reagan flipped on her back, walking down the stairs on her hands and legs, wasn't really worth it. I also read the book when I was a kid and thought it quite good. The Exorcist is really an excellent movie, and rather than scary or disturbing, is much more just entertaining and thought provoking. There's no gore in it to speak of (those movies I don't care for -- you couldn't pay me to see the Kill Bill movies for example), and I just think anyone whose avoiding it is just really missing out.

For some reason I've never got around to seeing The Omen. When it first came out I just developed a bias that it was just a copycat flick. Does it compare favorably to The Exorcist and is it worth the effort to rent or download?
