Barn Kitties!

Does anyone else see those extra links? There should be 4 photos and that is all. I have no idea why those little broken x boxes are there, but I noticed it happened the last time I posted - is this a new photobucket "feature"? I am not doing anything different.

14. I was at the feed store and a woman was putting up a note for free kitties and I
said I really need some barn cats - how many? Do you want to get rid of the mother too? She didn't want to give the mother away (parents names are
Bill and Hillary - a clue that I HAD to get these cats)

So after several attempts we got two of them home and a couple of tries later she managed to catch the shy one. They were mostly hiding under a big shipping container and very hard to reach at a convenient time for anybody to make a connection, plus 20 miles travel, so it took some effort!

I locked them in the tack room for a week or so to locate them and started spending time with them (barn is really clean now!) and caught a couple rats to feed them (little lions! not a scrap left) because that is their real job, the cuteness is just a (major) side benefit.

We buy a barnful of hay every summer and that was the first load - they were having a blast.

11. Great kitties but fabulous hay! Do you bale it yourself?
And yes, I see the weird photo tags next to your pictures...

15. it IS nice hay
no we don't have the kind of water for growing hay, but I get it from a guy who is local, down on the river (San Pedro) He is a good guy, family has one of the last small (less than 100 cows) dairies in the state. Good people, and I like to get it from close to home. Most of the other growers in the area are selling out or going to those huge one-ton bales for the big huge dairy that went in a year or so ago. Hard to find small bales and REALLY hard to find two-wire stuff anymore. (impossible to find real WIRE anymore - it's all plastic twine now, that stuff pretty much sucks, real baling wire is one of humankind's greatest achievements)

Otherwise it comes from central AZ or the Yuma area - 100's of trucking miles.

16. We have to truck ours in from WI, yes, hundreds of trucking miles....
Heh, but I disagree about wire baling twine! What a pain in the ass for us! I'm assuming you re-use the twine for fixing fence and I only have three-board. So I have to get my guys to actually think about recyclng (gasp!) metal twine instead of just pitching it into the garbage.

I tried the big bales once -what a pain in the arse. I am simply just NOT fixed to store it, or feed it out easily.

I do know a guy who uses the round bales at his horse farm: he simply unspools the entire bale down the length of his barn aisle every day and the guys just pitch hay into the stalls every morning. He saves a fortune by doing this instead of using small bales.

I am in such a sububanized area that the only guy who still bales hay can only give me 1000 bales or less/year. I truly wish I could patronize local farmers (any local farmers!) but we are just west of Chicago and it's impossible. There's just not enough profit on this land to make hay - taxes alone would eat a farmer up who still relied upon hay profit here.... :(
