Crocs Shoes Deemed Safety Hazard - Banned From Hospital
Edited on Tue Jul-31-07 06:46 PM by matcom
<snip>

Forget that they're ugly and expensive.

The wildly popular Crocs -- the funky, clog-like resin shoe derided by the fashion conscious -- have been deemed unsafe by administrators at Mercy Hospital, Uptown.

Workers in patient-care areas no longer can wear Crocs because the shoes have holes and pose a safety hazard, said Sharon Krystofiak, the hospital's infection control manager.

"If there's a chance you could drop something like a syringe in one of them, we want to avoid that," Krystofiak said. "Some of those holes are relatively large, almost like a dime."

In addition to blood seeping into the holes, Mercy officials are concerned about sharp objects, too.
"I think it's ridiculous," said Kara Depasquale, a Mercy ICU nurse who yesterday was working in her new Steelers Crocs -- black with a gold strap. "I mean, I can get a needle stuck in my arm or my leg."

1. Okay, now I'm going to want to throw dimes at them whenever I see them.
If anyone complains, I'll tell them that it appears that syringes and blood are the only other alternatives!

2. Plus, you will slip and bust your ass.
I have some crocs flip flops...not nearly as hideous as the clogs. But even stepping on a yellow line in a parking lot in the rain is dangerous. I've busted my ass at least three times that I can remember in those shoes.

I can't imagine working in a hospital, where there are, um, body fluids, and slipping on a slick floor. At least I've never fallen into pee or blood in the parking lots where I've slipped.
