What are your "Holy Grail" songs - (ie songs you want to see live at least once in your life)
I was telling my friend I had a list of "Holy Grail" songs - songs that I want to see performed at least once live in concert by the person/band who originated the song (and hopefully with most of the members of said band playing the song).

I've seen most of mine but I still have a few left which will require, of course, a Led Zeppelin reunion amongst other things.

I was hoping to see Rush at Madison Square Garden but the date didn't work out ("Closer to the Heart" is one of my Holy Grail songs).

So what songs would you like to see performed live by the original artist (where you can feasibly see the original artist - hey we'd all love to see "Manic Depression" by Jimi Hendrix but we'll just have to wait until we get to heaven)

1. Unfortunately
Mine will never be attained - "Smells like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana...

not long before his death, I blew off a Nirvana concert because I was a bit under the weather, rationalizing that I'd see them next time around. Unfortunately, a few months later, Kurt Cobain was dead.

Though, I'd love to see Van Halen with David Lee Roth doing "Runnin' with the Devil," and a few other VH classics, in concert - and, who knows, that may actually happen?

2. I'll be seeing Rush in August
but I've seen every tour of theirs since Power Windows, and "Closer to the Heart" several times. The did perform the entire "Hemispheres" on the Counterparts tour, which was one of my "holy grail" songs.

other than that, I'd love to see Bela Fleck do "UFO Tofu" live. or Carmina Burana, I think the St Louis Symphony has it on the schedule for next year..

3. I was really hoping to see Corey Harris do the old Woody Guthrie song Against The Law
He performs it on the Mermaid Avenue CD. It's about a tobacco strike in Winston-Salem. Harris was scheduled to perform in downtown Winston-Salem last month but the cops canceled the show.

I've seen "Comfrotably Numb" performed by Pink Floyd 4 times. The Holy Grail version would be with Waters. At least I got to see it at Live 8 but I wasn't actually there..

7. I saw Waters do it twice in Philly but he didn't do it at Live Earth
At concerts I call the big finale song done by bands for the encore their "Confortably Numb" song

10. also saw Waters do it live 1999
Once I saw The Sisters of Mercy play Comfortably Numb as an encore. A strange brooding goth rock version.

9. Well, it is possible
the remaining members of The Doors do tour, usually with the lead singer from The Cult.

Just wouldn't be Jim singing it

14. I'll say "Cinema Show" by Genesis
Edited on Mon Jul-23-07 01:30 PM by 5thGenDemocrat
I love Genesis' live recordings (early Genesis -- not so much the stuff done after Phil Collins decided to take his ego out on tour). They're coming to Michigan (DTE Energy Theater, I think) in September and I think we'll go. Hooray!
John
Have never seen The Who, either, and maybe someday I will.
EDIT: But I HAVE seen Crosby Stills and Nash twice, Crosby Stills Nash and Young twice AND Neil Young by himself twice.
And I saw Grand Funk Railroad twice -- twenty five years apart. They still jam pretty good, too.

I had tickets to see them when they were touring doing Foxtrot but had to stay home and take care of my dad that night. Finally saw them after Gabriel left and was pretty disappointed

20. I got mine sung to me!!!! It was one of those "I can die happy" moments.
I adore Neil Finn/Crowded House but never got to see CH live before they split up (they are of course back together now, but I digress). One of the last times Neil Finn played a solo gig in Chicago, I won a contest to attend a special private soundcheck party. About 20 of us got to watch him play, then we got to talk with him, get his autograph, etc.

Well, if I was forced to choose a favorite song of all time, it would be "Walking on the Spot" off of the fourth Crowded House album. It wasn't a single or anything, and would probably be considered a pretty obscure choice by most people, but there were times in my life when I had that song on repeat for hours at a time.

Anyway, Neil was the main songwriter and vocalist for Crowded House, so he often sings lots of CH favorites on his solo tours. But I had never heard that one. When he finished his soundcheck, he walked over to us and asked what we'd like to hear. I immediately blurted out "Walking on the Spot"! I half expected him to balk at the suggestion because he didn't remember the song well enough (that's happened with him before at shows). But he looked at me and smiled, like he was pretty glad I had asked. He sat at his piano and sang a stripped down, absolutely stunning version of the song.

I had goosebumps the entire time. I'm getting them now just thinking of it. Afterwards, I met him and could barely speak, I was still so overwhelmed by hearing that song.

sigh... :)

I'm sure there are others on my list but Walking on the Spot was my number one Holy Grail song.

Ooooh, I forgot! One of my other Holy Grail songs was "Message to My Girl" by Split Enz (another Finn-related group). But Neil sang that the very first time I saw him in concert. Again, it was really stripped down and soooooooooooooooo amazing. Neil's more mature voice brought a whole new depth to the song. Here is the original version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mG0LVRSx5Ng

28. ooo right on
I didn't think of that one :headbang:

Mine was 'Hallelujah' but then I saw KD Lang live a couple of months ago and she sang it, and her version is the most beautiful and I cried thru the whole song. So I can die happy now.. well song-wise.

25. My main one happened almost thirty years ago
and has always been my favorite song, anyhow.

Got to see Richard Kiley performing Don Quixote. We were in the front row. It sucked in one way--we couldn't see the acting on the back of the stage, only the front stuff. But then Kiley descended the stairs and was less than 3 feet away from me and directly in front of me and sang "Impossible Dream" there. **sigh**

I met him officially about 12 years later, and told him about that, and he got a kick out of it.

Not so much on many others, though--unless Duran Duran or Abba hold a concert sometime in the near future, I doubt if I will get to hear many of my other favorites.

mind you, I'm teaching myself how to play piano - that was one of the first songs I taught myself. Mind you it came from the "Big Book of Easy Piano Classics"
